My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ROOKIE is a 7 month old neutered black male Lab. He is a friendly boy. One of our volunteers met him at the shelter. She took Rookie to the off leash area, and he just wanted to run and explore. Rookie was very affectionate when she put him back on lead and enjoyed a full rubdown including a belly rub. He took treats very gently. Rookie pulls pretty hard on lead, so an easy walk harness will be good for him. Rookie was a bit overly excited and rushed over when he was introduced to another young male dog at the shelter, but he was waggy and wanted to play. The shelter thinks he just hasn't had a lot of socialization with other dogs yet. Rookie was also cat tested at the shelter and did fine. He was curious about the cat, but when the cat bopped him, he retreated.
Rookie was a stray to the shelter who came in wearing a collar, but no one ever came to claim him.
Rookie is approved for kids ages 10+.

Update (10/7)15: Despite the rainy weekend, Rookie had a great time dashing between raindrops, rolling in mud (and getting a couple of baths!) and snuggling on the couch with his foster mom and foster siblings for rainy day naps by the fire. He really loves his people, and took at least one nap sitting next to his foster mom on the couch, resting his head on her chest. While he could have easily gone stir crazy with the weather, he had so much fun playing in the rain, that when it was time to come in, he was tired and slept soundly.
The best part of the weekend is that Rookie has finally figured out how cool toys can be! He is still trying to figure out tennis balls, but snagged a favorite hedgehog from his foster sister and took few turns dashing around the yard, tossing and catching it, and tackling it on the ground. He really is the perfect blend of puppy energy and sweetness, and when he folds himself in half on the couch for a nap, you'll laugh at how he ends up being all leg.

Update (9/27): Rookie is having great fun with the pack since his arrival. He got to visit friends with his foster mom over the weekend and enjoyed a playdate with 9 other labs of all ages, colors and genders. He had an awesome time! He takes direction very well - especially from the other dogs. As he was recently neutered, he has a few extra hormones running through him and if he tried to uh..."play inappropriately" with a dog who wasn't a fan, a simple correction from them once kept him from coming back and trying again. He has wonderful house manners and hasn't had any accidents. He will occasionally pop up on the counter to check something out that smells delicious, but pops right back down when corrected. He has figured out the routine of the house easily and knows where he gets fed, where his crate is, and is learning how great treats can be. He knows sit, but sometimes is too distracted by the other dogs and his overwhelming desire to play to focus. When I work with him alone, he's much more focused, and enjoys the stinky treats best. He's just a sweet, goofy puppy who is ready to give lots of love to his forever family. When he's tired and done playing, he collapses into a heap on the floor and zonks, or will crawl in your lap for a few snuggles.

Update (9/15): Rookie is doing great in his foster home. He is young and energetic, and man does he love to run! We played in the yard this morning and he had a blast chasing the residents and other foster dogs while they chased the tennis ball and frisbee. He's not really sure about toys - even though foster mom throws them, they're not actually running... and the other dogs run, so they're *much* more fun to chase. Rookie clearly has some pent up energy from being stuck in the shelter and then the vet that he needs to burn before he will start to settle a bit, so he needs a home that is going to give him that, as well as training. He does appear to be house trained, and slept quietly in the crate last night after some initial protesting.

Trom transporter: Rookie rode very well on the trip. He's an excitable dog, since he's so young. So plenty of exercise and training will be good for him.
