My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male
Color: Black & White
Weight: 40 lbs
Variety: Bench

This is Henry. He’s a super-cute, super-sweet little Springer. He is active and affectionate, he loves to play, and he loves to be petted. Henry will lean against your legs for a nice rubdown. He has a great history with kids, having lived with infants and toddlers for the past four years. The surrendering owner reported that Henry loves children and often enjoyed playing with the neighbor kids of various ages. He even tolerates wearing a Halloween costume, as you can see from one of the photos at left! Henry has been well loved and cared for since he was adopted from a shelter when he was about one year old. He was surrendered to ESRA when his owners could no longer care for him the way they wanted to and the way he needs.

Henry is housetrained and crate-trained, and he knows to stay off the furniture. He knows a number of commands including Sit, Down, Come, and Wait. He also knows some tricks such as Shake, Play Dead, and Spin! Henry is very food and toy motivated, so he could easily be trained to learn even more skills. He is quite submissive and is easily frightened by raised voices. Training using positive reinforcement rather than corrections will help build his confidence. Henry's little tail flutters like a hummingbird's wings when he is happy, but he tucks it under and crouches when he is frightened. He loves to go for walks, but he does pull, so he will need training to learn to walk nicely on a loose leash. He is not good off leash.

This charming boy is very good with other dogs, and he enjoys playing with the resident retriever in his foster home. Henry loves being outside in the yard, where he spends his time looking for squirrels, tracking whatever animal may have passed through, or just sitting on the deck watching the world go by. He gets very excited by the sight of squirrels and rabbits, so he will need an actual rather than a virtual fence to keep him safely contained. He has not yet been tested on cats.

Henry has a great temperament, but nature did not give him good hips. He was diagnosed with hip dysplasia when he was about one year old. This is a common hereditary condition in which the ball of the femur does not fit correctly into the socket of the pelvis. Over time, the dysplasia causes arthritis. Recent x-rays have confirmed that Henry has severe hip dysplasia. If he is in any pain, you would never know it. He runs in the yard, plays with other dogs, hops in and out of a small SUV, and springs up onto the grooming table from the floor in a single bound.

Because of his hip dysplasia, Henry will need a Forever Family who is willing and able to provide him with the special care he needs to keep his hip joints in as good condition as possible, for as long as possible. This will include a high-protein food (at least thirty percent protein) to build and maintain lean muscle mass, weight management to minimize stress on the joints, appropriate low-impact exercise, and medications and supplements to maintain cartilage and lubrication in the joints. The good news is that the surrendering owner has kept Henry lean and did start him on Adequan, a monthly injection that helps maintain cartilage in the joints, when Henry was only one year old. If Henry starts showing signs of pain, such as trouble getting up or a reluctance to climb stairs, his family will need to add painkillers to the mix to keep him comfortable.

We know that this sweet little dog is the perfect fit for some loving family out there. If you think that family could be yours, Henry would love to meet you!

Please note that an approved adoption application is the first step in a more thorough interview process that is designed to match each dog to exactly the right family, and that the final decision rests with the dog's case manager.

Please read the Adoption FAQ and get an Adoption Application approved before inquiring about Henry.
