My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

May 2016 update: Huxley is a darling and shy boy. He is about a year old now. He absolutely LOVES his furry foster sister and is very affectionate with his foster parents now that he knows them.

This little guy is taking some time to feel safe, he is so precious and is a wonderful snuggle bunny when he starts to loosen up. He goes to work with his foster mom at a doggy day care and he is going to be a great family dog when he finds his place! He has been sleeping curled on a dog bed next to the human bed. He loves the attention from his humans and is working on commands like "sit" and "down". Before coming to us, Huxley and his siblings hadn't lived indoors so he had a big learning curve, and now he's got it!

Huxley is doing well in his home environment; his furry foster is his best friend and they have helped each other transition to their new lives – she helps him be more confident meeting new people and he helps her overcome her separation anxiety. At night Nessie sleeps in her crate so she gets a Kong. Huxley’s favorite thing in the morning is to run in her crate to lick the left overs. He is such a Labrador! He is so cute with his bottom teeth sticking out and his long skinny legs! Huxley has been taking classes and it will be important to continue confidence-building with him. He is still nervous but is willing to meet strangers that can ignore him at first.

When he goes for walks he picks up sticks and carries them proudly with his tail up high. He will help his furry foster brother carry a bigger stick, too cute!

Meeting new people is a challenge for Huxley, especially children. He will hide behind his foster mama but if another dog who he is familiar with leads the way, he does MUCH better! Luckily for him, his mom works at a doggy day care so he can have fun with his doggy friends.

Huxley is such a good boy at home, but leaving his familiar territory is hard. He goes places if his furry foster sister Nessie goes with him. He would rather be by himself than socialize if she isn’t with him. It breaks our hearts to see him so shy. He worries about loud noises and had an especially frightened reaction to a motorcycle revving up. Huxley’s foster family is working hard on socializing and building his confidence – going to day care with his mom, bringing him to “Barn Hunt” class to watch Nessie, participating in Nose Work, and a trial of acupuncture and calming medication. Huxley can actually be silly when he feels comfortable, loosening up in class and using the exercise peanut. He will play ball and will play well at day care with the other dogs.

Huxley's mom is a medium size shepherd mix who was also the mom to the S puppies who came this past winter (Sloan, Scooby, Scrappy, etc). She is a stray in a very rural area so we have no idea about the dad(s).
