My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let me introduce you to this precious boy Tyke. Tyke is an 8 years old Bassett hound/Terrier mix. As you can see in his picture he is a grown dog with stubby legs, has the Hound build however his personality reflects both the calm hound and an excitable fun Terrier.

Tyke would be a very easy dog, and could adapt to anyone’s lifestyle. Even though he has those stubby legs he loves to run, or if you're looking for a homebody companion he will be good with that as well.

Tyke came to us from a rural pound as he was found wandering on his own. For unknown reasons his owners did not want him back. It was very upsetting for this poor beautiful soul to be tossed aside after 8 years, especially since in our care he has been such a sweet and a terrific family pet. He just blends right in. I really think he just wants to belong to a family again, after being with a family for eight years I can’t image his thoughts and confidence right now. At first he seemed distant, not very affectionate, however warmed up to his new surroundings pretty quick. We are working on this by constantly cuddling with him and giving him kisses after kisses. He just seemed to have that lost look in his eyes, so sad. If you have the time and the love to give this guy it would make the world of a difference to him.

Tyke adjusted in here with us in no time and with our 8 year old dog became an instant best friend. He would do well in any home situation, apartment, or condominium. He likes the outdoors, likes to run, and his daily walks and then will rest happily. His temperament is very calm, but he will do anything when asked. He likes his play sessions where he loves jumping up for a toy; very entertaining watching this big bodied dog jump up like a small terrier. Tyke loves his belly rubbed and to sit by your side with your hand petting him. He would be an very easy dog for a first time family, (to know the commitment needed to own a dog but not have all the training to deal with), busy family (ok with staying alone for periods of time, without getting into trouble or travelling) or a retired couple wanting a travel or lap companion.

Tyke is completely house trained. He likes his morning pee right away other than that he will go out whenever you send him. It seems like he has never been crated and I don’t think this is needed due to his age. He sleeps on his bed all night, and when we leave him alone he does not get into any mischief. Car rides are his favourite, he will stick his head so far out the window that you have to be careful as there is almost nothing left of him inside the car. He needs to only have the window open a little bit for his safety.

We have socialized Tyke with other dogs and it’s hit or miss. He likes other dogs just fine but not all of them know what to think of him. I think because he likes to jump up right away the other dogs are turned off by this so might be something he needs to work on. If you have a very calm nurturing dog he will be fine with him as he is absolutely fine with our Lab.

He has no problem with anyone coming around his food or toys, he allows you to pick him up and is easy to give him a bath. He is just a go with the flow kind of guy! He is an ok walker, but has apparently not been trained to heel. Because he is part hound he loves to sniff everything! With his breed mix he is pretty stubborn but its not really an issue as we just put him on an extendable leash. This way he can sniff all he wants and then run and catch up, on to the next sniff. He does like to run but I don’t know how long he would last, but seems to want to go go go…

Tyke is a very gentle and good boy when it comes to his daily routines, he doesn’t seem to have any bad habits but is lacking in the training of commands. He sits and will come but when not distracted. He needs some more obedience training to help him learn more commands and to learn to respect his new family as leaders. Tyke will love the socialization of dog school as well and it will be a fun experience for him and his family. He is not too old to learn new things and we are looking for a family for him that will continue his training and take him to classes to strengthen their bond and upgrade his skills.

Tyke is a beautiful, friendly dog that will bring joy to any family. If you can commit to loving, caring, and giving this wonderful boy the forever home he deserves he is the perfect dog. All he wants is a family that will love him unconditionally and make him feel safe and wanted again. He deserves a forever home to show him that a good life is still in the mix for him, that he can still have love and security and be a cherished member of a family, and that he will never be abandoned again.

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption.
