My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Have you ever wondered why, when we have so many to choose from, certain ones catch our eye? Is it because they remind us of a special pup in our past... those sad pensive eyes...or possibly a wagging tail? On October 17th at 7:26 pm I saw a video of this gangly pup on Facebook. He was in a shelter in a suburb of Atlanta listed only as Animal ID #47253 Pen #198. When I played his video the look in his eyes when he looked at the camera was all it took for me to know #47253 was destined for something more.
When we first met him he was hesitant as he wasn’t sure what we expected of him. We would catch a glimmer of interest in his eyes... what's next? Do they like me? Will they be nice to me? When is dinner? Within the hour we were starting to see a goofy puppy emerge. At 5-6 months old he is the equivalent of a gawky pre teen, tripping over his big feet and overcoming his nonexistant balance. We played with many names at first, but because of his cheery and effervescent personality Buddy kept flying out. Although he was everyone's "Buddy" we all agreed Buddy was not only way over used in the dog name world. After playing with several names, and putting it to a Facebook vote, we named #47253 Pen #198 “Benji”.
Benji is actually bigger than he looks in his photos. The shelter had him listed as a Great Pyrenees/Lab mix....we were just not seeing it....Great Pyre?!? Our best guess is 80% hound and 20% mutt. (With his pretty spotted legs maybe a little bit bird dog too?) Benji is currently underweight at 37# but is giving it his best to catch up. His foster mom laughs that she thinks there is some Great Dane in his genealogy too as he is all legs. Plus he has great big feet! He is fast, loves to smell, loves people but is also very attentive as he is interested in pleasing you. He knows a good thing when he sees it!
Here in the Knoxville area we are blessed with a great group of University of Tennessee Vet School students who step up to foster. In a home environment these sweet pups can settle down, realize they are safe and loved, and learn lots of great tricks. Most importantly we learn what these pups need in order to find a perfect forever family. Also beneficial the students get tons of hands on experience with many different dog breeds.
Benji is currently living with another puppy friend who is also only 6 months old herself. They have so many toys mom's house looks like a preschool! They are doing very well together, of course what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine rules. Didn't I mention toddlers earlier? Benji is high energy and will need lots to do and proper chew toys to entertain him. Being crated the majority of the day just wouldn't be fair to him. Older children would probably fare better as he is big and clumsy and could easily knock a little one over. He is very affectionate and loves the dog park. If you are looking for a fun, sweet pup who will go on long walks with you and be a part of your family then Benji is your man.
Benji has been neutered, dewormed, received his Bordatella and 2 DHPP vaccinations. He is heartworm negative, on monthly Heartworm preventative, Comfortis monthly flea tablets and is microchipped.
