My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello everybody, my name is Chica (that’s Spanish for girl) and I’m an adorable 18 month old Chihuahua/Dachshund cross that weighs 12lbs. I look very much like a Chihuahua but have a long body. I am sweet and cuddly and little and cute and I am looking for my forever home where I can be loved and cared for. My previous family didn’t make a commitment to me and I ended up in a rural pound, unclaimed and afraid. I was so happy to be rescued and I’ve been very happy in my foster home, but now it’s time for me to find my true place and be a much loved member of a family.

I’m very friendly with humans, almost submissive. But true to my Chihuahua heritage I’m the boss when I meet other dogs. I may be young and small but I don’t take any funny business. I don’t mind dogs that behave appropriately but I have no problem correcting those unruly sorts. I need to be socialized more and learn to be more accepting of all kinds of dog, so I look forward to obedience classes where I can learn this. I would like to be the only dog in the house and get all of the attention. I absolutely LOVE to chase squirrels so I’m pretty sure I’d like chasing cats too. I would be fine in a home with a laid back cat that doesn’t but me or rile me up, but a skittish or aggressive cat would not be a good fit with me. I’ve been pretty good with kids as long as they don’t treat me roughly. I would be fine in a home with kids over 12yrs of age who are accustomed to dogs and know how to properly treat and care for a little dog.

I love playing with squeaky toys. If you throw it I’ll go get it. Sometimes I bring it back sometimes I don’t. Just depends on my mood. I will also grab a stuffy toy in my mouth, shake it around and throw it across the room. I am good at entertaining myself! My hearing is very sharp and I hear everything! My head is constantly moving around as I listen to all the noises I hear. I’m not a big barker but I have barked for a minute or two when I’m first left home alone. I don’t like being alone. I’ve been sleeping in my crate at night and I’m ok with that. I’m completely house trained so my foster parents don’t keep me in the crate when they go out for a few hours. When they come home I’m usually laying contentedly on the couch waiting for them. I love to snuggle on the couch and be close to my people. I am very affectionate and will be your best friend.

I am energetic and I need lots of exercise so I don’t misbehave when you’re gone. So far I’ve been good left alone, but my foster parents are good about walking me a lot so I’m quite contented. When I have to go out I get all jumpy and do turns at the front door. I am young still so I get bored easily if I’m not exercised regularly. I walk great on a leash unless I see a squirrel then I want to run after it! I don’t have a fenced in yard in my foster home so we go for lots of walks for exercise and bathroom breaks. But if I had a fenced yard in my forever home I would also like to play and run around in it. It won’t substitute going for walks, but it will be fun to have. I can live in pretty much any type of home environment as I’m small, not yappy, and don’t require a ton of indoor space. I’ll be happy anywhere that I get out for walks, car rides (I’m very good in the car and will be a great travel companion), and have a person or people to love me and cuddle with.

My rescue is very big on proper training of dogs, regardless of size, and they know about the huge benefits for dogs to go to obedience classes not just for the training but also for socialization. I am very keen on going and learning new things and meeting new people. I know I will charm the trainer and be a teacher’s pet! I am looking for a family that will take the time to train me properly and take me to school and bring out the very best in me. I will do my part and try very hard to pay attention to the lessons and not just want to chat up the dog beside me. :)

Overall I think I am pretty great and my foster parents tell me that they agree. If you are looking for a little dog with a BIG personality then I am your girl. I am a HUGE kisser and would love to lick your face (legs, knees, hands, etc.) for the rest of my life. Do you think I could be the one for you?
