My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

JAKE is a 1.5 year old neutered chocolate male Lab who weighs 71 pounds. Jake must go to a home with another dog. Jake is an easy dog, he likes to be with you He has played with a few of the LR dogs without problems. He is starting to play with toys but hasn't played retrieve yet, he will go see what you tossed then look as if to say "What am I supposed to do now?" He enjoys getting petted and thinks a belly rub is a treat. Jake is looking for a home with an active family that has another dog that has a yard for him to play in. Good with other dogs. Knows sit, down, stay and come. Will have a training addendum.. Pulls some on lead don't think he has been on one much good with an Easy Walk Harness. Keeping his room clean at the shelter and kennel so is probable house trained. Jake's story: Jake has been around for a young pup. He came from MO and was given to owners uncle in LA. A few months later his original owner daughter was visiting her uncle and found Jake bone thin, tied out on a chain with no shelter. After raising Cain she brought him home and nursed him back to health. As she had 3 other dogs she gave him to a friend of the family in OK who was looking for a dog for her son. Jake stayed with her for a couple of months and lived with her two labs and they all had a great time. Recently she brought Jake to her son in VA and he was settling in nicely and getting along with their dog. Family was going out so they put the dogs in the garage and when they came home they found two tired dirty dogs with several things knocked over from them playing. They decided it was Jakes fault as their dog never did anything like that. The next day they went out with their dog was in the house and Jake was in crate in the garage. When they came back Jake was out of the crate and waiting at the garage door with some toys that had been in a basket on a bench. They were going out again the next day so Jake went back in the crate and when they came home it was like the movie Ground Hog Day. They found that when they left the dogs together there was no problem except evidence of them playing. When they separated them and put Jake in the crate in the garage he would break out and be waiting for them to let him in the house. Based on that they decided that Jake had separation anxiety and turned him into the shelter. The kennel manager tried to tell them Jake needed to be with another dog but they knew better. She asked if we could get him a home. Someplace along his journey's someone used a shock collar on him as the underside of is neck has healing sores that look like those a dog gets when the collar is turned up to high. He is approved for kids 10+.

Update (12/02): Jake went on a field trip this week, he went to work with his foster. He was extremely well behaved, was good in greeting everyone and happily accepted being petted -- everyone loved him. Jake liked the car ride and got some french fries as a treat the way homer. He met some of the foster friends with his tail wagging and came right up to them. Switched him to an Easy Walk harness this week and he is doing extremely well with it (no more pulling). He is showing very little fear at loud house-hold noises and he laid in the room with the vacuum going.

Update (11/19): Jake is a wonderful snuggler! He has gone from being a shy dog who tried to be invisible to being in the middle of things. Jake gives kisses not only to his foster mom but also to the three resident dogs. He enjoys his twice daily walks. Jake has met a puppy and an adult dog on the walks and was a perfect gentleman to both. Jake does have some prey drive so he will help rid your yard of those pesky squirrels and bunnies. He will also try to go for them on walks but corrects easily with a “no”. He has not been crated for the past week and has done well. He has been known to countersurf but we are working on that. He likes playing with the resident dogs but will also entertain himself with a toy if no one else feels like playing with him. He really is a sweet, loving boy.

Update (11/09: Jake has been wonderful at his fosters. He was a little shy at first but once Jake trusts you, he will gently nudge your hand to pet him and he will give you kisses. He met the three resident dogs and they are all playing well together. Jake Paisley and Toby played several games of chase through leaf piles I had just raked up.. He takes treats gently and waits nicely for his turn. Jake was excellent in the car on his way to his fosters, he laid down in the backseat and did not make a peep. Jake is good in the crate, the door is left open, he will go in for a quick nap after playing.
