My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Duke is an 8 yr old male Golden Retriever. Duke is part of a bonded pair with a 6 year old black lab named Bear.

Duke is a sweet big boy. He likes to be scratched behind his ears and will thank you with gentle licks on your hands. He likes to walk around the neighborhood but he doesn't like to be rushed. He is strong and sometimes a squirrel crosses his path and he will remind you how strong he is. He has become comfortable with his walk easy harness and will patiently wait for you to place it on him.

Duke will sometimes bark a bit in order to remind you he is hungry. He likes to nap and play with his brother, Bear. Duke likes balls and his rope toys. His hips have a bit of arthritis so he'll do best in a home willing to put rug runners down on any slippery surfaces. Don't let his hips fool you; he is an energetic and curious boy.

Duke and Bear are quite the pair. They love being together but they do both enjoy their own special attention time. When they are separated Duke will bark and Bear will whine. Sometimes they have to be told to settle down because they are big boys and do not realize how rough they are with one another. Duke will often give his little brother a lick or two and Bear likes to snuggle up against his big brother.

Duke and Bear can be walked together but they walk at different speeds. Duke likes to take it easy and Bear is easily distracted. Bear will pull if not reminded to slow down. Both dogs love being outside. Duke needs to be walked separately for now because of his heartworm. They will protest the separation with a bark or whine but will eventually settle in order to get out and exercise.

Would you open your home to a wonderful pair?

Duke has tested positive for heartworm. He is receiving heartworm treatment. He will need to be on a no activity regimen for the first 30 days while he recovers from this treatment and on a low activity regimen for 6 months.

Both his treatment and blood test after 6 months are paid for by GRFR at one of our contracted vets. Duke's forever family will need to be sure he takes a monthly heartworm preventative year round. Some people might be leery of a dog like Duke who has had heartworm, but there is no need to be. It is both curable and preventable.
