My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"Garth" is a large, handsome 2-yo neutered male GSD who is very affectionate, playful, and a little headstrong. Garth is friendly with strangers and is likely good with children, though I've yet to have him around any youngsters. (He does take treats very gently from hand.) Garth is great with most other dogs, but he does have a strong herding instinct so will chase after really hyper dogs and might nip them. (He does this w/ one dog I have here at the GSRSV rescue ranch.) I will not consider a home with cats for Garth. Garth is long, tall and lean, weighing about 75 lbs. He could handle another 5-10 lbs without slowing him down.

Garth knows some basic commands, and when he's right in front of you he'll sit immediately on command. However, his recall is still selective--that is, he'll come when I call sometimes, and other times he won't. However, he's shown marked improvement in this area since I rescued him and I know he'll be a quick learner for somebody who spends more time with him than I can. I have not had Garth on leash since I picked him up, so I imagine he'll need work in this area.

Garth is housetrained and very mellow inside. It was pretty obvious when I rescued Garth that he had seldom or never been inside a house, and it took awhile for him to stop peeing inside. But he seems to have the idea now. Garth loves being in the house and is always laying on a dog bed in my office when I'm working.

Garth loves to play with balls and squeaky toys. He has not gone swimming in the GSRSV pond, but does like to splash in shallow water. He has a fluid GSD stride, and would likely be a great long-distance runner.

GSRSV rescued Garth on Nov 6 from the Stanislaus County Shelter in Modesto, where he was brought on Oct 25 after being picked up as a stray.

Garth's adoption fee is $275, which includes a microchip.
