My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

RUFUS: 12 Year-Old Neutered Male Labrador Black 89 Pounds

Meet Rufus, a sweet senior guy, brought in as a stray through the San Jose Animal Shelter.

Rufus appears to have belonged to someone, was well fed (could stand to lose a few pounds), but neglected otherwise. We think he was a backyard dog, as he arrived at the shelter with a pretty severe case of Fly Strike (a warm weather disease that primarily affects dogs confined to the outdoors in the summer and fall, fly strike is most often caused by the common stable fly, however, blackflies, deer flies, and houseflies can also bite.) He also has a callous around his neck, likely from being chained in the backyard.

He's a big mellow marshmallow, gets along fine with other dogs, and we're not sure about cats. With other dogs, he wags his tail, sniffs, then not much else beyond that. He will sleep in a crate, will bark at first, but does settle in. He will counter surf if given the opportunity. He rides well in the car, settles quickly and enjoys the ride.

He was placed in a foster home at the end of October, and here's what his foster has to say:

He is very sweet. Last night I let him sleep in the bedroom with me (& Molly) & he did fine in a bed on the floor. Before that, I was gating him in the kitchen each night with a comfy bed. He sees well enough to catch food mid air on occasion when I throw it to him.

I think he will bond with someone well once he gets settled. He ‘kisses’ me occasionally & always wags when I talk to him. He has gotten to know our routine & is starting to settle in a little better. He will chew on things when I am at work, and I attribute this to boredom. He does not do so when I am around.

We would like Rufus' senior years to be with a family where he can lay his head in a home, get lots of attention and affection. He appears comfortable walking about a mile a day, but right now, not much beyond that. He does have arthritis and is on medication for that and will be getting his teeth cleaned.

Rufus has been neutered, has all of his shots, has had a full blood panel, is heartworm negative and microchipped.

Rufus is in a foster home in Los Altos.

If you are interested this sweet guy, call Rescue Rep Kris at 415-652-6091.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
