My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rex is sweet 3 1/2 year old handsome boy who loves people. He is potty trained, crate trained and will make an awesome family member. Rex's story is a little different then most. Rex was turned in to a veterinarian's office in Georgia with no known owner in the picture and in desperate need of care. Rex was hit by a car and his worst injury being a broken left front leg. A very generous veterinary office took Rex in and gave him the surgery and care he needed. After the successful surgery, he was not out of the woods as they then discovered he had heartworm which was also treated. Without any of this care and the person who brought him in, Rex would surely not be with us today. Rex stayed with the vet for nearly a year while they gave him the treatment that he needed. They grew very attached to Rex but knew he need a real home that will love and care for him the rest of his life.

(Keep in mind as I write this Rex is laying down about 10ft from me and 7ft from my other Border Collie Stoli.)

On 12-22-15 Rex had arrived at our house. He growled a bit at my Border Collie Stoli. He also did not care much for my 3 pound 3 legged poodle Macaroon or my cat Andy. Keep in mind, Rex had just arrived from Georgia by car, it was late at night, and he was in a completely new setting. Though he was loved and cared for at the vet's office, it is not a home setting and different dog rules apply. Any signs of aggression have to be stopped. Rex kept his eye on Stoli and Stoli kept trying to avoid eye contact or any sort of conflict. I kept Rex on a leash I let him get close to Stoli. He lunged at her without growling I quickly pulled the leash and told him "NO!" You can tell he felt sorry and he knew that that type of behavior would not be allowed at any level.

Over the next couple of days Rex quickly turned into a family dog. The day after Rex had snapped at Stoli you can tell he still had an eye on her but because I was watching him close he never made and further progress towards her. As of today when I am letting them outside Rex, Stoli and Macaroon all run to the back door and will stand next to each other with no issues. Rex's seemingly aggressiveness is not really aggression it is more Border Collie instinct and excitement. He has never learned doggy social skills. He doesn't know how to act in certain situations. The great thing is that he listens really well when you tell him "No" or "Easy". As long as you are able to identify when he gets excited there are no issues. With that being said, for success in his future home, at this time I will not be adopting him out to a home with another dog(s). He is fine with my cat so I would say homes with cats are ok. It is definitely something that will get better with training. I know there is a not an issue with Stoli and Macaroon but Stoli is very submissive and we watch them very close.

In the short time we have had Rex he has changed so much. He has really fit into our family with very little trouble. Which goes to show you of his intelligence, obedience, willingness to learn and please. Rex loves toys. He is now returning toys that are thrown to him. He is learning to catch and it is really funny. I say, "Rex you ready to catch this? Catch it catch it." He sits 4 feet in front of me and I will softly throw the ball in the air and with his mouth already open he tries to catch it. We are at about 50% catch success rate right now. He is so happy when he catches it. Rex has an awesome sit and will offer you his paw free of charge. That works really well when you are wiping is paws off after coming in from outside. Rex is very gentle. He takes treats very softly, will not jump up on you and is very good on the leash. Rex is not an "active" Border Collie but keep in mind he still is a Border Collie. Rex doesn't require a working farm or to be kept active with some dog sport like agility (though he can learn it) but he still has a brain and is very smart. Obedience classes should be a part of any dog's life and certainly Rex's.

Rex is going to make someone or someone's family very happy. He loves unconditionally and does not want to disappoint. He has a lot of life ahead of him and needs to find his furever family
