My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This beautiful, fun girl is Rey. (Star Wars fans will recognize the name!) Rey is seeking her loving forever home. She is a three year old Golden Retriever/Lab mix who is smart, affectionate and so active. She is a large sized, stocky dog who came to us weighing 70 pounds, but has put on some pounds since. Her black fur is very beautiful, soft and shiny; this is all due to a great healthy diet she is current on. Rey has been a joy to foster but it is her time now to find forever home and we know that there is a great person/family out there looking for this exciting girl to share their lives with.

Rey came to us from a rural pound as she was found wandering on her own. She must have been out for quite some time as when we met her she was a little underweight and in desperate need of a bath. We are working on getting her weight up as well we have given her a few baths, which made a world of difference. She adjusted extremely well as soon as we brought her home. Rey’s previous owners may have had her outside majority of the time as she wasn’t familiar with indoor living. She has since learned how great it is to be a house dog! We have found that they also must have played rough with her because when she gets very excited she grabs your arm. It’s not to hurt you it’s the way she was taught to play. She now is being taught it is bad and with a little “Ouch” sound backs down immediately. This would be no fault of hers and it is the only bad habit she has and is just going to require more re-training so she learns that grabbing onto people during play is not allowed.

She deserves a person/family that will be devoted to her and will commit to giving her guidance; in return she will be the most loyal and loving dog to you. Rey is house trained, will let you know when she wants out by going to the door. We do let her out regularly (every two hours), when she wakes up, after each meal, after any playtime and before bed. Rey needs to be in a crate. She sleeps in her crate at night pretty well, it take her about 5 minutes to settle. She is also in the crate when we leave the house. She is a little mischief girl when bored or lonely and like most Retrievers tends to grab shoes, blankets, anything in her sight. She needs to be supervised so she only plays with appropriate things. If she is keep busy and gets her daily exercise she will outgrow her mischievous ways. The crate is also good for afternoon naps, she is a very busy dog and especially for the first while she will not want to leave your side, every time you move she will. If you have the time to relax she loves cuddle and give you unlimited kisses. She is just so adorable and loveable and has those eyes that will just melt your heart.

Rey would do well in many home situations, but not an apartment building. She would love a home with a big fenced yard for her to run and hang out. She is not fond of being tied up and this will not be a suitable practice for her. It would also be best for her if she is not home all day by herself as she gets lonely and likes to have people around more often than not. She is being fostered with another dog and two teenage boys. Even though she gets along with our dog, we feel that she would do better as the only dog or with a dog that enjoys a lot of play time. She is a persistent girl so if you do have another dog in the family they will need to want to play with her a lot. The other dog will need to be a well behaved dog as well so that Rey can pattern off of them. Rey has just started learning obedience and house manners since coming into foster care and we want her to continue her learning in her forever home. She will need a lot of attention and time from her family in the first months as she settles into her new home and learns the rules. We would hate for her to fall into bad habits since she has been working so hard to be such a good girl. Rey loves our boys, you can floor wrestle with her and she will let you put her into any position, kind of like a rag doll. Even though she is good with our boys, children in your household should be teens, just because she does sometime forget that her rough play is not welcomed. She is a solid, big girl and will be too much dog for younger children. She has no problem with anyone coming around her food or toys, she allows you to pick her up and is easy to give her a bath. She is not an aggressive dog at all. Just wants to play and please.

Rey will need an experience dog handler, as she will definitely take advantage of someone who doesn’t have the experience of owning a dog behind them. She has the basic knowledge of right and wrong but will need that experienced handler so that she will continue to be a well behaved dog. All it takes is firm verbal correction to stop unwanted behaviour which makes her so easy to live with. Remember most rescue dogs have not had the training or care so they will do whatever they need to, to please the people they are with. Really Rey loves her people and just wants to please you, she is true Retriever when it comes to family.

Rey’s daily exercise will need to consist of walks, and outside play time. We have Rey on a flat collar as well as a gentle leader. She walks with a gentle leader when we are going for neighbourhood walks. The gentle leader helps with keeping her attention on us as there are so many sounds and movements that are new to her, it seems like she is not too familiar with busy city areas. Her attention needs to be on us so she knows we are confident and she has nothing to worry about. When we go through the trails and know she will social with other dogs we use the flat collar, this way she knows that it’s OK, to let loose. She has caught on quickly to verbal commands on her walks. She heels by your side and we are getting her to sit at each road crossing. When we are approached by another dog we get her to sit, as she has not conquered the polite greeting as of yet, so she needs to learn that she needs to be calm to greet other dogs. Even though she has a basic knowledge of commands in her she will still need to attend obedience school with her new family. This will be a great bonding experience for both her and her new family.

Rey’s loves her outside play which is mainly just running around. She loves to run fast, more than fetch or anything. That is why a big fenced yard would be so good for her. I’m sure once she has been in her forever home for a while and has had the training necessary she will be great on trails off lead as well. If we find our time a little tight we have also had her running bike side even just for 15 minutes, she loves this and does very well. We have socialized Rey with other dogs and she does not show any dominance over them. When she is with her friends this is when she loves to run and fast. I cannot express how important it is for Rey to get her daily exercise; she needs it for her physical and mental well-being. If you can commit to giving this beautiful girl the time and love she need and deserves I have no doubt she will be the best behaved dog on the block. Rey has the basic commands under her belt like sit, lay down, come. We work on her training daily, and she finally responds to her name. Training for Rey will have to be included in your daily routine, with dedication and consistency as a priority for all family members. She is such a smart girl I can only imagine the kind of companion she will make once she has the training behind her. Rey is the most beautiful, friendly dog. If you can commit to loving, caring, and giving this sweet girl the attention and active life she deserves she is the perfect dog for you or your family. All she wants is a family that will love her unconditionally and a forever home to show her a good life that she deserved from the beginning and will show her till the end.
