My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

PETEY is a 11 year old neutered black male Lab who weighs 66 pounds. Petey is extremely friendly, very adaptable, gets along with any type, age people and dogs. He doesn't shy away from anyone, people or animals, especially if there's chance for a treat or stroke of his shiny coat could result. He loves to be petted, especially on his belly and under his chin. It only takes a few minutes of petting before he'll lay on his side in order to take full advantage of it. When you stop petting him, he'll put his paw on your hand or leg to let you know he's not ready for you to stop! Takes very little time petting him before he will do the Lab lean. He likes to take long naps during the day, especially in the sun. He has one bed near the fire place in one room and another near a window, which gets a lot of sun, in another room and he goes back and forth between the two beds during the day. He's ok with stairs, provided they are not too steep or a lot of them at once. He knows sit, stay, come, down, and responds immediately to a short sharp whistle. Petey is absolutely the most lovable dog ever and impossible not to adore him, especially when his ears perk up (they look like a little girls pig tails coming off the side of his head), and his tail is in constant motion. He's just a really sweet guy and any family would be so lucky to get him.

Update:: Petey is a sweet little old man who isn't looking for too much. He would be happiest in a home with few to no stairs and someone who is home more than not. Petey can easily live with other dogs but would be ok if he were the only one getting the love and treats.

When Petey came to Lab Rescue, his nails were very long. We've been working to get the quick to recede. Today he got mail - Dr. Buzby's Nail Grips for Petey. They seem to be helping him navigate the hardwood and tile floors. Petey has very little muscle control in his back legs which makes him slip and slide a lot. Petey loves food and treats! When foster mom leaves for work, Petey stays in his man room. She "hides" a few treats in the room for him to find. His eye sight isn't what it used to be, but his nose knows!

According to the vet, Petey is somewhere between 11 and 13 years old, but not sure since he was a stray when Lab Rescue got him. He got a clean bill of health at his recent annual check up (1/16/16), weighed 65.8 lbs (a good weight per the vet) and is current on his shots and such. He has a cyst near his right hip, which the vet aspirated and confirmed it to be benign, just fat. His dark soulful eyes are cloudy now, the vet said looks like could be cataracts, so his vision isn't great (he doesn't run into things or anything like that), but his hearing, and of course, smell is very acute. He doesn't have a full set of teeth and the ones he has are very worn down, vet says likely from chewing rocks, or gnawing on a metal fence as a stray. He's only barked a couple of times since we've had him, always had a soft whimper, which now is just barely audible and raspy. He is very mellow, good natured and a loyal, constant companion. He does best with 15 to 20 minute walks, the vet recommended 3 to 4 such walks a day is adequate exercise for him. He likes to walk, does very well on a leash, but we do not let him out in the back yard unless we are out there with him as it is not completely fenced in and he will pick up a scent and follow it. Petey is approved for kids ages 10+. More info soon!!!

Update:: Petey has been doing much better on the desmopressin (medication for diabetes insipidus). He has been able to keep his wrap dry during my school/work day. I no longer crate him and just gate him in a bedroom. Most days I come home to find him sound asleep. When we are home together, I take him out pretty frequently. There have been some accidents but that is just part of loving Petey.
