My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This goofy and energetic rascal is Todd, a 10 month old Shepherd/Lab darling that is looking to find his very own family. Don’t be fooled by those sad, droopy eyes: Todd is as happy and playful as they come! Life brought Todd to our rescue but we can assure you it is not due to any fault in his character: Todd has a wonderfully loving and curious personality that has won over the hearts of everyone he has met. Weighing in at approx. 70lbs, Todd is one of the most gangly and un-coordinated dogs his foster family has ever seen. Being curious and un-coordinated can often prove difficult and everyday Todd faces new and unique challenges that he almost always fails to conquer: not getting kitty litter up his nose, not banging his head while backing out from under the table, and not getting canned pumpkin in his eye are battles that Todd hopes to one day defeat. We can assure you that what he lacks in naturally ability he makes up for in spirit and effort and these qualities will make you laugh every single day.
Todd is an extremely athletic and energetic pup that will require an active lifestyle, especially until he outgrows puppyhood. Todd is currently walked for forty-five minutes in the morning and for a minimum hour in the evening. He is learning to walk well on a gentle leader but still does pull when he gets too excited seeing another dog or a sneaky bunny. He has been making great progress as he responds well to corrections and will settle very quickly. Todd recently started biking and absolutely loves to pull his foster dad around the neighbourhood. He spends a lot of time exploring outside and it would be beneficial for him to go to a home with a big fenced back yard where he can run around and burn excess energy. He loves playing with his foster brothers and can usually be found biting ankles or stealing a toy to incite play. Todd settles nicely in the house but his love of toys (and overly puppyish nature) sometimes gets him carried away. Although walking is essential for Todd, he will require some form of running activity (fetch, playing with another dog) in order for him to be tired enough to settle.

Todd demonstrated his Houdini skills from the start and escaped from his crate the second time he was left alone. From that day forward he earned the right to roam free in the house and hasn’t been crated since. He is completely house trained and has never gotten into mischief or had an accident when left alone. He loves getting a treat toy, an antler, and a frozen Kong when we leave and this will keep him occupied while you are away. He does bark when our neighbours come home or when he hears noises outside so an apartment or condo will not be a suitable forever home for him. Todd sleeps beside his fosters bed every night and doesn’t go too far unless, of course, it is to sneak his alligator stuffed animal in for a 2AM squeak fest.

Todd would do well with or without animal companions but because of his energy level and love for dogs it is preferred that he have a happy and playful canine sibling to call his own. He currently lives with dogs and cats and spends his days bugging all of them. He eats and sleeps with the dogs and has never once had an issue with them surrounding food or toys. Although he loves dogs and would never intend to hurt them, he plays fairly rough and is “all paws” so he would do best in a home with a medium to large sized dog that can keep up with him. Todd’s potential new sibling will also need to be a well behaved, patient dog who will understand that Todd is still a growing boy and has some learning to do. Todd absolutely adores cats and is probably the worst for reading any signs of discontent. It isn’t uncommon to see Todd being repeatedly batted in the head and still proceed to lick or sniff them intensely. If Todd will be gaining a feline sibling it is best if they are laid back and willing to accept a dopey new brother.

Todd is not being fostered in a home with children but has been excellent with the children that he has met while out and about. Although he really likes children, he doesn’t understand his size and strength and could easily knock a child down accidentally. He thinks nothing of throwing his paw on you when looking for attention and this could be a scary and painful experience for a child. It will be best for Todd to go to a home with children who are over the age of 10 to avoid any misunderstandings. If Todd will be joining a family with children, it is imperative that his new family teach him boundaries around the children and that the children know the appropriate way to treat and approach a dog.

Although extremely goofy, Todd is also exceptionally smart and knows many commands that often can prove challenging for an active pup to master. He is both food and toy motivated and catches on to new tricks and commands very quickly. He is very patient (ex: will wait until you give him the command to go to his food bowl each meal) and already has excellent recall when either retrieving a ball or being called in from the backyard. His forever family will be required to attend a basic obedience class with him to help continue this training and to build the bond that is essential to him flourishing in his new home. Of course, continuing past basic obedience to the more challenging levels is highly recommended for our big, goofy boy as it’s only a matter of time before he matures into the brain that’s hiding in his teenage head. He’s going to be a very smart dog and will excel at advanced obedience and/or dog sports.

Overall, Todd is a large, lovely puppy with a gentle soul and will be a loyal and loving companion. He loves head rubs, stirring up trouble with his foster brothers, and any toy or activity imaginable. If you are seeking a dog who catches a ball 70% of the time, spills more water than he drinks, and will put quite possibly anything in his mouth, Todd is most definitely the dog for you!
