My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Smitty.  Smitty is a darling 12 - 18 months old male Border Collie that was bailed from Bakersfield.  He is black and white with a semi rough coat and a docked tail.

Smitty required Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) surgery which is the removal of the head and neck of the femur.  FHO surgery is the removal of the "ball" part of the ball-and-socket that makes up the hip joint.  This way, the bones of the joint are no longer in contact, which eliminates the pain that is caused by the abnormal contact of the bones in a dog.  Smitty has been cleared by our veterinarian for adoption.  His medical records are available to be transferred.

Smitty is a love bug and loves to be around people. He has been around older children and is fine with him. Smitty is well socialized with the other dogs in his foster home, and loves to go for walks, just walks will not be enough to keep Smitty satisfied.  Smitty loves to play fetch, I think he will play for hours if he could. Smitty is housebroken, crate trained, leash trained, and knows his basic obedience. Smitty has issues where he pees when he gets excited and he also submissive pees. Smitty is a happy go lucky fellow, with a really nice temperament, but will need to be introduced correctly to other dogs because he gets unsure of new dogs he meets. Smitty loves to wrestle with other dogs and this has to be second favorite thing to do after playing fetch.  Smitty has typical adolescent puppy energy that will require consistent exercise, along with mental stimulation so that he does not get bored and destructive. His adopter must be committed in the continuance of strengthening his leg.

The ideal home for Smitty is one that is border collie savvy home who understands the demands for an energetic and active yearling.

If you are interested in meeting our dogs, please go on line and fill out an adoption application. We require a pre-approved application to be on file before any meet and greets are scheduled. The electronic application can be found on our website at http://www.bordercolliesinneed.org/border_collie_rescue_and_adoptions/adoption_application.html
