My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Marty!

Marty was a stray who went the pound on January 28. I spoke with animal control on the following Monday since Marty had not been claimed. Animal control approached the home owner who sent Marty to the pound and asked if we could neuter him and put him back because he should go 'home.' The home owner wasn't for that because Marty kept going into their house. Ok...plan 1 is a no go...

Plan 2...anyone waiting for a cat? Of course not, animal control talked about farming him, while I hadn't met him I was told he was 'kind of' nice. I was adamant about not farming him, but a safe outside home would be okay. At this point I hadn't met Marty yet...

I didn't hear from animal control for the rest of the week so I assumed Marty had been homed. Then a call on Monday, Marty is still at the pound but a safe (and Litter Box approved) outdoor home had been found but animal control was wondering if my deal to neuter him was still available...ABSOLUTELY!

Monday, February 8, animal control was to take him to the vet and the new owner was going to get him Tuesday after he was neutered...I was going to stay out of it but...

Then I met Marty at the vet...

What a SWEET boy! Doesn't know me at all but acts like I'm his best friend. Anyone who let him out of the kennel would probably have been his best friend.

But...

His eyes looked funny, almost sunken. Maybe dehydrated? No... Check of his gums...kind of red...ugh...time to draw blood for testing. Whoosh...FIV- and FELV- so that's not it, thank goodness! Must just be an eye infection, right?...

First thing...I contacted his future home and told her that I was going to take Marty because he is overly friendly and had an eye problem. She really didn't need Marty, she was taking him to save his life so it wasn't a big deal when I told her I was taking him in.

Marty got knocked out to get neutered and Dr. Baltzell looked at his eyes. Marty has no upper eyelids. WHAT?! It is called eyelid agenesis. Two thoughts, he was born with this, or he had a horrible infection as a kitten and he actually survived.
We will never know, but what we do know is that Marty has been living outside, at least part time, which hasn't been ideal for his condition. He hasn't been treated at all, yet he is a super nice boy.

What does this mean for Marty? He can see, without a doubt he can see out of both eyes. He squints most of the time in order to keep his eyes moist. Dr. Baltzell has said that Marty does produce tears otherwise his eyes would be dried up and gone at this point. Marty just needs some help moisturizing his eyes. He is being treated once a day with artificial tears. This is something he is going to need for the rest of his life. It is a 10 second process once a day and artificial tears are about $3/bottle which will last around a month.

Marty is about a year old, at full grown he isn't a big cat. He is not aggressive towards other cats. He is doing in his foster home with 2 other cats. He likes to talk and isn't afraid of exploring new places.
