My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

“NIKO” is a silver Miniature Poodle who is now available for adoption. This 14″ tall (measuring from the floor to his shoulders) and 16 1/2 pounds handsome boy is 9 years old (11/10/2006) and had been deeply loved his entire life by his family.

This is an extremely nice and very active Miniature Poodle who loves attention and gets along with all of our Poodles. You should see him run! He will gather toys and place them onto our couch to surround him. Throw a toy and he will run to get it ALL THE TIME. He will also walk around the house with a toy in his mouth. Oh so cute. Niko is a perfect gentleman in our home.

Niko just loves everyone who comes to our home, but especially loves men! He greatly enjoys sitting in Mike’s lap and has recently asked to join us in bed. I will have to think about that. Grab a leash and he will walk to the end of the world with you.

Sadly, while with his family, Niko developed bladder stones which required surgery. He was also in great need of a dental cleaning. His family found that with their newborn baby and other children, they could no longer afford to care for Niko. So instead of having him euthanized, Picket Fence Poodle Rescue was called. Thank you, Rosa.

Letting go is not easy, but when is doing the right thing ever easy? So this absolutely wonderful, loving and playful Miniature Poodle was surrendered to us.

Niko was immediately seen by our Veterinarian, Dr Sarah at Barrington Oaks Vet Clinic. Tests, blood work and x-rays were done which found Niko in good health but a surgery for his bladder stones needed to be quickly done.

A two hour surgery to remove various stones located in his bladder was done by two Vets. However, during the surgery, they found several stones embedded in his urethra which could not be flushed out. An emergency scrotal urethrostomy was also done.

This procedure required a one inch incision to be made into the urethra and the lining of the urethra is sutured to the skin edges to create a permanent opening through which urine can pass. Thus, Niko will now urinate like a female.

PLEASE KNOW THAT Niko is just fine and certainly feeling a lot better. His teeth had not been cleaned in a long time, so we were very surprised to learn that when our Vet recently cleaned them, no teeth were pulled! The Vet was very surprised how nicely his teeth did clean up and what great shape they are in.

Test results along with a biopsy on his bladder stones were done by the Minnesota Urolith Center at the University of Minnesota. Niko’s “Report of Quantitative Analysis of Urolith” show: “90% Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate (Struvite)” and “10% Calcium Phosphate Carbonate Form”. The report also shows “100% Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate”.

Yea. Nice big words, but what does this mean? In brief, Niko will be fine! However, he will now be required to remain on a special dog food (example: “Royal Canine S/O Small Dog Food” for the rest of his life. This will help prevent future bladder stones from forming! YEA!

Another set of X-rays will be taken March 15th to determine if any new bladder stones are beginning to form. After that, a urinalysis is done every 6 months and x-rays done yearly to help detect and prevent any future stones. No big deal. This can be easily and inexpensively done.

Niko is now looking for his new family, a “forever more” home. Did I tell you that this is an EXTREMELY NICE POODLE??

His $250.00 adoption fee (plus $18.00 MN Tax) helps pay for just some of his Vet work. Also included is his kennel (which he likes), a soft blanket, a dog bed, a bag of Royal Canine Special dog food, treats, sweater, leash, collar and lots of information to help your adoption start on the right paw forward.

If you can not adopt Niko, please consider a DONATION as they are being accepted to help pay for Niko’s extensive and expensive surgery. Thank you for your help.
