My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet amazing Oscar! Oscar is a 1 year old heart stealing, ball chasing, lovebug! He's never met a stranger and he's quick and eager to please his people. Oscar was initially found as a stray and brought to York County Animal Control. From there he was enrolled in the New Leash on Life Program. This program partners a shelter dog with an inmate through the NC Department of Correction. Oscar spent 8 weeks learning a variety of commands and participating in a Canine Good Citizens graduation. This training is the first step for a dog to become a licensed therapy dog and Oscar excelled in the program! He learned sit, stay, high five, shake, loose leash walking and so much more. He even goes potty on command! He walks beautifully on a leash and he's already house and crate trained.

Like most young boxers Oscar is energetic and playful. His favorite activity on the planet is fetch and he will chase the ball and return it to you for as long as you want to throw it! When he's not playing, Oscar loves to snuggle with his people. He will love you for life in exchange for a belly rub, they are his favorite! This boy really is ready to be the perfect family companion. He loves people and other dogs and while curious about cats he's shown no cat aggression. Like all young dogs he enjoys exercise and he's an absolute dream to take a walk with. Oscar also loves children and he loves to flop over for belly rubs with the little ones. Because of his size, we encourage interested families with young children to consider their home environment and habits with their pets to be sure their children know how to interact with a larger dog. Oscar will be excellent with a family with older kids since playtime is his favorite time.

Oscar has one more awesome thing going for him. He's deaf. Now, you might think that being deaf is a problem but we assure you it's one of his best features. The inmates who worked with Oscar taught him hand signals using American Sign Language, so that all of his commands are special and unique to him. They're easy for us humans to learn and Oscar has been taught to look at his people often for direction. When you're out and about with a deaf dog you don't have to worry about loud noises distracting them. It's amazing! Oscar is especially patient with kids where another dog might not be because their noise and giggles and yells aren't startling to him at all, he cannot hear them. When there's a knock at the door while Oscar is asleep, he continues snoozing away rather than barking.

Owning a deaf dog is a rewarding and fun experience. They bond to their owners intensely and they look to them frequently for direction. Because of this, once a dog has commands worked out, they are excellently trained companions! The benefit with Oscar is that he's already been shown his commands and he has them mastered! Any family adopting him has a great foundation to build from with a stable dog who is so happy to please his people!

Oscar is the whole package, he's loyal, loving, playful, gentle, and above all, fun. He's ready for his forever home and any family lucky enough to adopt him with have a treasure for life!
