My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

July 2016 update: Billy is an adorable and unique combination of Lab and Basset Hound. He is three years old and just beautiful. He was found as a stray and never claimed, as is so often the case in southern states. Billy is great on leash, loves the play yard and has a happy, friendly personality. He LOVES squeaky toys and he is great with other dogs. Billy was given a SAFER test (temperament testing commonly used with dogs) and he passed with flying colors on every aspect of the test.

Billy's New England foster family tells us: Billy is so smart and is learning commands quickly. He is laid back, calm, and good with kids, cats and other dogs. When we go on walks he wants to stop and meet everyone he can see, literally everyone! He’s becoming a local celebrity! We found that he doesn’t like peanut butter (what dog doesn’t like peanut butter, right?) and he is not super food motivated but he just loves everyone. Billy’s long Basset body means that he can be at risk for injury if he is jumping up and down, on and off furniture, up stairs etc. so the vet recommended doggy stairs and ramps for him to help him stay happy and healthy for the long haul.

Billy is a goofy couch potato who likes to exercise in short spurts of laps around the backyard, chasing you or chasing a toy. If you run, he'll chase as if you're a toy and use his mouth to play with the "toy" so he will need continued training on how to treat the human hands differently than a toy or another dog. He is fantastic on walks – he will be content to lounge on the couch or bed but as soon as he hears someone pick up the leash he pops right up and is ready to go. He is a total ham when out in public. Billy loves to be surrounded by other people and other dogs. He will cuddle and try to get into the lap of everyone he meets. He LOVES to meet other dogs so he could easily be a therapy dog, office dog, etc. Billy loves kids but almost acts like a herding dog when chasing people, nipping at them. He just needs some direction to help with this.

He is crate trained and sleeps in his crate most nights or will snuggle in our bed. He does prefer being with people rather than be alone or be crated but we found the crate actually helps him stay calm and relaxed.

To learn more about Lucky Pup Rescue, please visit our website: www.luckypuprescue.org. If you have interest in any of our dogs, please fill out the application and we'll work with you to find a great match for your family: http://www.luckypuprescue.org/#!adoption-application/c1aw8.

Please note, we do not have a physical facility where our dogs are housed, they are cared for in our network of wonderful foster homes throughout New England. If you find a dog you would like to meet, our expectation is that, once approved, you will travel to meet the dog in the foster setting where they are feeling safe and loved.
