My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This beautiful boy is Levi. Levi is a 3 year old male German Shepherd/Australian Cattle dog, with the gentlest temperament. He is a medium/large sized dog, about 45lbs, with an athletic body and a wonderful disposition. He definitely has the Shepherd colours but his face has more tan to it and eyes that will just melt your heart. A cute little trait is that he has a prance when he runs. Levi needs a special person that has a big heart to love him unconditionally.

Levi was picked up by a rural animal control facility where he was an unclaimed stray. He must have been out for quite some time as when we met him as he was malnourished and his fur so dirty. We are working on getting his weight up as well have given him a few baths, which has made a world of difference for him. We think he was left outside in the winter at his old house, as he has some frost bite on the end of his ears. Levi knows his basic commands and has no bad habits so why someone is not looking for him just blows my mind.

When Levi first arrived here in his foster home he was a very cautious, uncertain boy, however has come a long way since being here. He seems to gravitate toward the female figure, and was a little nervous around the males but he is learning that everyone in the household is kind and that being in a house is pretty great. It didn’t take him long to get comfortable in the house as he has taken over our one coach (which he did want permission to get up on). He always wants your permission to do things, and that is great for a dog. Eager to please!

In the time that we have had him I think we have gained his trust, as he has changed so much. Levi now likes to cuddle with all our family members; he is still more attached to his foster mother but welcomes attention from everyone. If you want to go out he is right by your side, if you want to just relax he will relax right beside you. One thing that is a must, you cannot mind dog kisses. I have not met a dog that wants to give kisses as much as this guy.

Levi is completely house trained and has quite a strong bladder, no accidents since the first day we brought him home. He will let you know when he wants out. If you decide to crate him he is fine with that; lays down right away and sleeps through the night. Lately we have had him out of the crate overnight and during the day while we are gone. He doesn’t get into mischief at all, however will interrupt your sleep by given you kisses during the night. We had to put him back in his crate as I was not having great sleeps. He only would do this to me, the female in the household.

Levi would do well in any home situation, as long as he is not left outside all the time. His new family do not need to have a lot of experience with dogs as Levi would be the perfect first pet for anyone. He would need a couple/family where the female is most available to him, especially at the beginning but he will come to love all members just like in his foster home. Levi is being fostered with another dog and teenage boys. We do not know how he would be with cats, but we do have guinea pigs and he really pays no attention to them, just curious when they are noisy in their cage. He shows no aggression and we would think he would be good with children as well.

We haven’t been able to socialize Levi with a group of dogs, however on our walks he calmly greets them and is then on his way again. He loves his walks whether they are 1/2 hour or an hour. Levi is not an overly active dog, he will run around for a little bit and then all of a suddenly you look over and he is just laying in the grass looking around checking things out. Either he is not ready to show us the really active side, or he really just hasn’t been exposed to a lot of different things. He does not fetch, or chase balls. He does not play with squeaky toys. He does seem to like real bones, as that is the only thing he has taken out of our doggie toy bin. That is why we are thinking he was just left outside with nothing but a bone, poor boy he doesn’t know what he is missing. His foster brother is really trying to get him to play with him and his squeaky toys so hopefully he will catch on. We are trying to teach him about all these fun toys he has missed out on so he can keep himself occupied at times, so he is not always by your side.

Levi will need to go to training sessions. Not because he really needs it to behave, but more to bond with this new family. He is good at walking; he is not a puller so we just have him on a regular collar. He is heeling great and just likes to check his surroundings out. Once he is familiar with his new family and more training he will be great for off leash trails, biking etc... He likes water but we have not had the chance to get him in swimming yet, just stood in the water. He comes immediately when his name is called. He sits, stays, shakes a paw, and more. We even tell him to stay back in the car he doesn’t come over the back seats. We work with him daily just to see what other surprises he has, as he is such a good boy and seems to know and do everything we ask of him. That’s why we feel he would be ok to go to new dog owners, as he is just so fantastic! He doesn’t even have any bad habits; no jumping up on tables, no barking, and whatever else is bad, he doesn’t do it! Doggie training will help to keep him on this great path.

Levi is looking for a family that will allow him to come into their lives 100%, allow him to spoil them with affection “kisses”, provide them with entertainment and show them unconditional love. He doesn’t want a hard master, anyone to mistreat him or to feel alone! If you can promise to give this beautiful boy unconditional love, totally commitment, a gentle warm heart and a life that he deserves Levi would be the perfect dog for you.
