Animatch has said it before and we’ll say it again Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, and Toto don’t often show up here. Although there are exceptions, we mostly get dogs that other people have inadequately socialized, ineffectively trained, and treated badly. Many of our adoptees have been pushed from one lousy situation to another. We count on you – the adoptive family – to meet each adoptee’s needs, be it exercise, training, or medical requirements. Animatch provides the dog ... the rest is up to you. Jasper was one of these cases when he arrived at Animatch his first time around. He was found abandoned and lying on a mattress on the side of the road. He was a rambunctious adolescent with no boundaries and desperately in need of training. Jasper was recently returned because he tends to roam and charge through the electric fence. Now, when Jasper was adopted, we certainly did not realize that he would be alone on some days for 10 hours and crated or tied. Despite being adopted by a family with good intentions, had we been informed of this at the beginning it would have been quite obvious that Jasper was not the right “match”. It is possible that he was just full of pent up energy. Our promise to Jasper is that next time we will get it right. He needs an active family where he is not alone all day. He requires long daily walks and play time – he has a passion for retrieving balls. Obedience training, using positive reinforcement, is also recommended. A fenced yard is a must for Jasper. Please don’t come to Animatch or any rescue looking for a “perfectly, trained dog”. However, please do come if you want to help dogs like Jasper -- to give them the love and respect they so deserve. Give Jasper and our other adoptees a chance and they will reward you in ways you never thought possible.
