My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

This is Jade! She is a beautiful purebred Shih Tzu. She is 18 months old and is the standard size and weight (12lbs). Jade definitely has the Shih Tzu personality and sass! She loves to be cuddled on your lap or having her belly rubbed. Her small size would make her a wonderful in town companion, but she is currently being fostered in the country and has adapted well to having lots of room to run.

Jade was rescued from a local shelter and had the dreaded “not suitable for adoption” title to her name as she had a previous history of bossy and stubborn behaviour. When I met her at the shelter I could not believe that she had been labeled unadoptable. She jumped up on my legs wanting attention and to be pet. She tried to say hello to every single person we met in the halls. She was so social and friendly to everyone. After a short period of time in our home I did see some of that Shih Tzu sass that she had been labeled with. She can and will test you, but I have found with patience, consistency and you being the “pack leader” she will gladly give up the boss position. Her new parents will need to be experienced dog owners and be authoritative so she doesn’t slip back into her old habits. I don’t think she has had much training, but she is learning quickly and is eager to please. We will only consider a home for Jade where her people will take the leadership role and ensure that Jade has rules. She has become a lovely little girl since being fostered but she has rules here and is treated like a big dog. I don’t allow her to get away with bad behavior and instilled from day 1 a “this is how we behave” expectation with her. We don’t want her slipping back to her sassy ways which she will certainly do if not given proper direction and authority.

Some of the things that Jade and I have learned to work on is food guarding, crate training, accidents in the house, being picked up, and in general asking her to do basic things (sitting, down off the couch etc). She would sometimes growl and nip. I am happy to say that after only a few weeks most of those things are not an issue anymore. She is crated at night and when we are at work which is sometimes a full day depending on our shifts. She can be picked up and can be asked to get down and to go into her crate without any issues. I have found though that she isn’t as responsive to my husband and still tests him. But he isn’t as strong of a dog leader and she hasn’t learned to respect him yet. I don’t think that Jade has an issue with men in general, it’s more a need for every member of the family to be strong leader.

In our home we have many other animals for Jade to interact with. She has 2 dogs that she lives with and has had no issues at all with them. She doesn’t interact with them or play with them but she has taken a liking to our cat! She plays with him and they chase each other around the house. She would love to have a kitty friend if possible! She can go to a home with another dog as long as it is understood that she probably won’t play or interact with them. She would do equally as well being the only dog and getting all of the attention. We also have a 10 year old daughter that Jade absolutely adores. Although she likes children I don’t think a home with children would be suitable given her previous tendency to be unpredictable.

Jade is great on leash walks, she stays right beside you and doesn’t pull. She would prefer to run around the yard and play versus going for long walks. She loves to play ball and toys! She is great in the car (in the crate and out). Given her breed she needed to be groomed, you could not see her face at all when we picked her up. In true Jade fashion she tested them as well. The groomers took their time with her as they suspected she not had not been groomed previously. More experience at the groomers will benefit her greatly.

It would be safe to say that Jade’s previous owners never took the time and energy needed to make her the wonderful dog that she can be. So what she needs is someone to take the time to continue teaching her and she will become your best friend. Attending obedience school with Jade will be a necessity as she is such a wonderful little girl when given direction and clear leadership has been established. I have seen a huge change in her in the weeks that we have had her. She is now a happy, playful, dancing sweetheart of a dog that has grown on our family, but I am truly excited that she will find her forever home.
