My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

7/19/16 Foster Update: Guinevere is fantastic! It's very hard to understand how anyone could give up a dog that has the sweetness, love and gentleness this dog has! She gets along with everyone and loves to have visitors. I have found nothing that remotely seems like a problem with her! She is completely house broken and she lets me know when she wants to go outside. She only wants love and be around me and the other dogs. I have a little dog that dominates all the others and I have notice she has calmed down and is more relaxed with Guinevere here. It is like Guinevere has showed her to relax and be part of the family. She is so laid back and walks great on a leash. Just know she is PERFECT! I'm in Love!!

Her Story: “I found her on the road and took her to the shelter, but because she had a skin issue, they were going to euthanize her,” is how Guinevere’s happily ever after tale began.

Tammy was on her way to pick up Super Nova from the shelter when she came upon a sweet and scared black beauty on the side of the road. Our guess is that her former owners took the cowards’ way out, and instead of facing the shelter staff, they dumped Guinevere on the shelter road. When Tammy stopped, Gwen jumped in the car with her and Tammy knew she had to help this trusting girl!

Guinevere is estimated to be about 3.5 to 4 years old and is a stunning black Retriever mix. Her foster mom found that Guinevere responded when she said the word "Rio" and affectionately calls her "Ree-Ree." She shares, “She is a delicate little flower who is fine with other dogs but is so focused on people and would thrive in a home as an only dog. She's a calm, loving, docile soul.” Take a look at this sweet girl in her video! Her foster mom told us she is "EXCELLENT ON A LEASH -- gentle, walks well -- and EXCELLENT IN THE CAR. She has a gentle mouth with treats." She's a total love and so gentle. Her ideal home is a quiet one as she likes people more than dogs. She has a low to moderate energy level, but her spirits soar when she is alone with people. She becomes so animated and happy!"

Gwen is heartworm negative, has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. She weighs just a bit over 40 lbs. We found out that she had been adopted initially from that shelter about 3 years ago, had their micro-chip, and she was already spayed. Guinevere is house-broken, rides well in the car, and is just waiting to become part of a loving family! She is ready to come north on 7/16!

Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
