***Let us introduce you to… the American Shelter Dog! When we look at dogs of unknown parentage, such as this beautiful pup, the best we can do is guess at their breed, and it turns out that even dog experts are usually wrong when doing so. It’s been shown that nearly 90 percent of shelter dogs visually identified as a particular breed/mix are mislabeled. Please understand that it is impossible to reliably identify the breed(s) or predict the behavior of dogs solely on the basis of their appearance. Though we may not know their blend, we do know that the love of a rescued dog is without boundaries and touches all those in its reach, often transforming the rescuee into the rescuer!***

About Happy Paws Rescue, Inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

Happy Paws Rescue Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and New Jersey non-profit corporation dedicated to animal rescue and adoption. We specialize in the rescue of dogs and cats from high-kill shelters where the prospect of permanent placement is unlikely. We also serve as an educational resource for the public regarding the prevention of cruelty to animals, in addition to spay and neuter awareness to reduce the population of homeless and stray dogs and cats. By working with committed volunteers and veterinarians, we provide all dogs and cats in our care with medical attention and a safe haven prior to placement in their permanent, loving homes.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Join us on SUNDAYS from 12pm to 4pm for Adoption Day at the Petco in Piscataway, NJ. (1333 Centennial Avenue, Piscataway, NJ 08854, 732-981-8189)

Our Adoption Process...

The adoption fee for dogs/puppies is $300. They are ALL neutered/spayed, given age-appropriate vaccinations, Frontlined, and heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (Interceptor), and microchipped.

Adoption fee for cats is $75. They are ALL neutered/spayed, FELV and FIV tested, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, Frontlined, and microchipped.

The applications for both cats and dogs are each two pages long and ask appropriate questions. If prospective adopters have pets, or recently had pets, we perform a vet check to ensure all animals are/were well-taken care of and neutered/spayed. We ask how long young or needy dogs will be left home alone during the day, whether the yard is fenced-in for dogs who require this, and if renting, we perform a landlord reference and approval of that pet. We do home visits for our dogs to ensure the home is safe and that the dog will be comfortable there. For cats, we ask about declawing (have you ever declawed a cat, will you declaw this cat). We do not adopt to homes with unneutered/unspayed animals, or animals not up to date on vaccinations, or to owners that have declawed/plan to declaw.

Our contract states that adopters will bring the animal to the vet within two weeks. If the pet is ever no longer wanted, the adopter is to contact us and we will take the pet back (and we always do). Volunteers performs several follow-ups, either by email or phone, to ensure the pet is doing well and to answer any questions. We also provide the adopters with the phone numbers of all of our board members at the time of adoption should they have any concerns or questions.
