Lewis's Story...
This gorgeous guy with the beautiful eyes is Lewis! He's 2 years old, neutered, current on his vaccinations and house trained & kennel trained. He gets along nicely with dogs after proper introductions, hasn't met any cats yet and is great with kids! He became a Meacham's Mutt after we were contacted by an organization that helps women in abusive situations. They had placed 4 dogs for a lady but she wanted to keep Lewis because he was special to her. He spent time at two boarding facilities where he was not doing well stuck inside of a cage all day & night, which happens to many dogs not used to constant confinement. His former owner disappeared and never came back for him so after a scuffle with two dogs, he was going to be euthanized as he had nowhere to go. We couldn't let that happen and our Rescue President begged them to give Lewis another day so she could work her magic. Within 24 hours, one of our Staff was on her way to get him, where she found him laying in his own compacted feces in a small kennel, weak & underweight with a noticeable limp. We found out later that he had jumped the fence in his previous home and had broken his pelvis, which was never treated but had healed. He did not require surgery but was left with an overcompensated level of muscle mass in his upper body. His Foster Mom says he's a total stud with a big, beefy head & upper half, a small body and a killer smile! She even calls him her tadpole! Lewis' injury and past life haven't changed who he is, he's a very friendly guy and everyone who meets him is smitten!

Lewis is a love bug whose idea of a perfect day would be cuddling all day & night! He would love to sleep in bed with his people and he'll definitely keep you warm in the winter! He's not shy when it comes to kisses and he likes giving them so much, he sometimes gives headbutts in his excitement! Occasionally when he's giving kisses, he'll even nibble on his person, which is adorable and will make you laugh! A beautiful, brindle boy with gorgeous eyes, Lewis has a happy smile that will brighten any day! His main goal in life is to be loved, and he's always by his Foster Mom's side, following her around the house, just wanting to be with her. When he sees her near the treats, he happily spins in a circle a few times, then rushes to his kennel, where he waits for his treats. A quick way to his heart is with ear scratches, peanut butter and muscle massages on his big, front legs! (Due to his previous injury, Lewis never lays on his back and his Foster Mom makes sure not to rub or put pressure on his hip/pelvis.)

When it comes to learning & following the rules, Lewis is a good boy who listens very well, is extremely eager to please and is motivated by making his people happy. Even when he's being naughty, if he's reprimanded, he quickly corrects himself and is right by his Foster Mom's side. He knows the commands Sit and Stay but hasn't been taught Down, due to his injury. He enjoys spending time in his kennel and is thrilled when treats are left as a surprise for him. This sweet guy loves going for walks but doesn't walk very well on a leash and needs to work on leash manners. We learned that he can't walk very long because of the strength in his legs, which grinds his nails down to the quick on pavement, which causes them to bleed, but we did find out he likes to go swimming! Lewis looks forward to car rides, he always calls shotgun, and he enjoys watching the world go by the window, flipping that big, beautiful head back & forth.

Dogs are a big part of Lewis' life in his Foster Home and he's very influenced by them. He loves being part of a pack and even joins in on their silly pack howls! He's become best buddies with Juliet, a sweet girl who's also available for adoption with Romeo, and he likes to play with her, even though she doesn't always participate, which is fine with him, because he'd rather just snuggle with her & take a nap. Meacham's Mutt Jazzy likes hanging out with him & going for walks, and so did Remi!

Lewis isn't just all cuddles & love, he also has a silly side! When he wants something, he makes a noise that sounds like a donkey! This handsome boy with the big smile & gorgeous eyes makes the loudest, whiniest, big baby, bull horn sound and it's hilarious! He tends to be clumsy because of his overcompensated muscles in front so he tackles the stairs like a swimmer and leaps down them like Superman! He's a happy, goofy boy who will bring so much joy to those who love him!

Lewis looks forward to a lifetime of snuggling sessions with his loved ones, nibbling on peanut butter and being loved! He recently found out his Foster Mom is moving and can't take him with her. If you would like to foster or adopt this gorgeous guy with the beautiful eyes, please visit our Foster or Adopt page and fill out an Application for Lewis.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Lewis, a St. Louis Pit Bull Terrier dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Pit Bull Terrier for sale in St. Louis, or seeking a Pit Bull Terrier dog from a breeder in St. Louis.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in St. Louis already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a St. Louis breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Pit Bull Terrier breeders who help with Pit Bull Terrier rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in St. Louis paves the way for another one to be saved.
