Facts about Bernie

  • Breed: Italian Greyhound
  • Color: Black - With Gray Or Silver
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
  • Sex: Male
Bernie is a true example of his name, Bernardo, which means “strong as a bear”; he is a big boned, gentle, cuddly, eight year old Biggy Iggy. We don’t have a “back-story” on Bernie because he came into Rescue from a Shelter but we do know that his dental care was neglected for several years; a recent thorough dental resulted in the loss of all of his teeth. Being toothless does not affect his ability to eat which is why he is currently on a diet and exercise plan to help him lose a bit of extra weight. He is a “couch potato” by nature so a daily walk should be part of his routine. He walks well on leash, is comfortable around other dogs but he is also content to be an only dog if you can provide enough one-on-one companionship for him. Bernie is house-trained to take himself outside to potty so his new home will need to have secure, fenced outdoor space and a doggy door. If you are looking for a calm, best buddy and you have room in your bed and your heart for this loving bear please contact IGCA Rescue for an application package.

This dog is being fostered in Las Vegas. If you want to adopt this IGCA Rescue dog, please write or go to and to learn about the IGCA adoption process and receive an application. We are always willing to consider placing a dog out of the area, but applicants are asked to apply to and work with us through their local IGCA Rep. Visit

About Italian Greyhound Rescue Southern California

About Our Rescue Group...

Rescue is a service provided for Italian Greyhounds that have been abandoned at animal shelters, taken from abusive homes, or surrendered to Rescue due to the death or divorce of the former owner. Occasionally, dogs are turned over to Rescue because the owner can no longer keep the dog and the dog was acquired from a source to which it cannot be returned.

IG Rescue members foster these orphans in their homes, where their health and temperament are evaluated, so that they can be placed in a home suitable to both the dog and new owners. Before being placed all dogs are taken for a veterinary check-up where vaccinations are updated, the animal is neutered or spayed, any serious medical conditions are treated, and if necessary, their teeth are cleaned. Each Italian Greyhound can potentially cost Rescue hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars to rehabilitate. All members of Italian Greyhound Rescue, from the board of directors to your local representatives, are strictly volunteers, and do not receive any compensation for their services.

Our Adoption Process...

The process to become approved for adoption includes an application, phone interview, and home visit. Once you are approved, and if one of the fosters fits your lifestyle and needs, as determined by the home visit, we will put you in touch with the foster home where you can go to visit the dog. If we don't have a fit, we will put you on a matching list.

The adoption fees are as follows:
Up to 6 months $375
7 Months to 2 Years $350
3 Years to 8 Years $325
Over 8 years $300

These fees are sent to the Italian Greyhound Rescue Fund to offset the cost of medical expenses of the dog being placed, and provide medical care for future rescue dogs.
