My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Chantel is a 2-year-old harlequin female who came to rescue after being turned into Animal Control with a severe skin infection. Even though her skin makes her not feel yucky, Chantel loves being around people and wants lots of love. We do know in her previous home she lived with other dogs and small children with no issue. She prefers medium to large sized dogs and does not care for smaller dogs who get in her face or hyper. Chantel has never lived with cats before.
Chantel will be on Medical Hold for several months while we work to improve her skin and get her feeling better before she is adopted out.
Chantel came to MAGDRL in June (5).

Update July 1
Chantel is settling into her foster home nicely. She is a smaller Dane and weighs 105lbs. She is currently living with another Dane and a boxer and loves to play. She likes tug of war with humans and dogs but she has to be watched as sometimes she starts to play a little too rough. She does not resource guard or have any aggression...more of a no social skills type behavior. She is more of an Alpha and will need to be with dogs that can deal with her bossy type behavior.

Chantel will need a slow intro to other dogs until we learn more about her. She was "pouncing" on dogs when she first came into rescue and although that behavior has subsided she still needs to be watched closely when around other animals. Chantel has played with a 45-50lb dog and played fine (again...slow intro and controlled setting and watched the entire time). She does not do well with smaller dogs that are very mouthy. Although she has not played with one the neighbor has a Pomeranian that runs the fence and barks. Chantel will charge the fence in a less than friendly manner.

Chantel is a love bug with humans and will do anything for attention. She had a bit of separation anxiety when she first came in to rescue and was following her foster mom around ALL the time and cried when she couldn't see her. That has subsided a little and she is now able to stay in the same room but does not need to physically touch her. She is a leaner and prefers to cuddle up with you but her mom can now cook dinner without her attached to her leg :)

Chantel is currently living with 2 children (ages 16 and 6). She LOVES people and is fine around the children but will need to be placed with children who have been taught to respect and handle large dogs. She is careful around the 6-year-old but sometimes her startle reflex spooks her and she can knock down a smaller child if they do not understand to back away.

Chantel is currently under medical care and not cleared for adoption. She has tested mange free but her skin is still in desperate need of help. We are hopeful we can find the reason for her feeling so yucky and get her fixed up as soon as possible.

Chantel is house trained and crate trained and walks well on a leash. She is to be watched while walking on a leash for dogs in the area as she is unpredictable on how she will react. She is learning to walk on a gentle leader and will not pull. She heels pretty well when told "with me". Chantel has knowledge of basic commands (sit, stay, paw and down) but currently will only do them for food. Her foster is working on a little more disciplined behavior for basic commands. As Chantel is only 2, a training requirement and a fenced in yard will be stipulations of her adoption. She will make a wonderful addition to a home for a family that is willing to work on her socialization skills and give her tons of attention.

***UPDATED 11 Aug 16****
Guess who is off medical hold????? That’s right…our girl Chatel. We are SUPER excited about her getting better and are now going to be able to actively recruit for her forever family. Chantel has been seen by 3 veterinarians and the consensus is that the remaining issues with her skin is a result of severe scarring. No one can tell why but their best guess is a bad sunburn or mange when she was younger that went untreated. Either way, poor baby had had enough drama in her life and now needs a home to call her own.
So let’s update what we know about Chantel. She in deed does NOT do well with dogs under 40ish pounds. Chantel is ALL puppy and will need training as a stipulation of her adoption contract. She is super sweet with anything on 2 feet. Because of her puppy-like behavior we are still recommending she go to a home with older children. She is a ball of energy and would make an excellent outdoor LEASHED running partner. Chantel has a bit of leash reactive behavior when she sees another dog (big or small). Chantel continues to play a tad rough and is easily excited. She would be fine as an only dog and would be OK if placed with a laid back larger dog that can tolerate her zeal. Chantel is a super sweet cuddler and LOVES to be next to her human. She is not a licker but shows love but nuzzling her head into you when she is getting petted.
With the good comes the bad (sigh). Although Chantel LOVES baths she LOATHES nail trims. Her last couple visits to the vet we had to muzzle her for nail trims but she may get a little better in time. Chantel WILL counter surf and go into trash receptacles if left unattended. She does not knock them over, she just figured out how to open the lid. She DOES know her boundaries….she sometimes doesn’t care. She knows she is not allowed in the kitchen but if food is out she will go in without hesitation and get it.
She is NOT mouthy at all. She is NOT a barker and has little to no prey drive. She will not chase squirrels and chipmunks or birds in the yard.
