Woody - Adoption Pending's Story...
Woody is a Dutch Shepherd-mix, male, 4 months of age.

This puppy was picked up as stray and entered animal control emaciated, dehydrated and with an injured hind leg. Subsequent diagnostics revealed Woody’s leg had been broken at some point but had not been set or cast, leading to an improper fusion of the bones and rendering the leg useless. As a result, his leg was amputated. Post-surgically Woody entered a Monroe SPCA foster home, where he currently resides. He receives antibiotics, and eats highly nutritious, frequent meals in order to gain some much needed weight and muscle mass. The surgical wound is healing well, without signs of infection. The sutures will be removed within days.

Just look at those soulful eyes and big ol’ floppy ears! This joyful, affectionate youngster with a deep, warm heart yearns to bond with a compassionate, loving owner. Calm with a serene demeanor and extremely people-oriented and social, he wants nothing more than to become a most cherished, always included furry family member. Endearing and highly devoted, once he gives you his heart Woody will love for a lifetime…and he asks nothing less in return. Although friendly and sociable, this alert, thinking dog needs a respectful minute when meeting new people--- he wants to be sure they mean no harm. Frequent, on-going socialization--- providing safe opportunities for him to meet new people, and master new activities and situations--- is essential in helping Woody develop the confidence and discrimination he needs to recognize who or what is a threat and who or what is normal; otherwise he may be prone to be overly suspicious.

Four month old Woody delights in the novelties he finds at every turn; everything is new to a puppy and this playful guy is absolutely enchanted with it all! Highly intelligent and easily trainable, alert, focused and attentive as well as responsive to his handler, Woody will eagerly learn---and enthusiastically perform---anything you ask of him. This young fellow is looking for a responsible and caring owner who will provide the structure and companionship he needs and craves. A bit on the sensitive side, Woody needs a kind leader who guides with a patient, loving hand. To be at his happiest, Woody needs regular mental challenges and would enjoy having a job to do; he will no doubt excel in obedience and just about anything else he does; he lives to please. Woody has already mastered several commands such as sit and come. He is house and crate trained and walks well on a leash. We must say that is not bad for a four month old puppy!

Having been through so much at such a young age, Woody shows himself to be one undeniably resilient, brave and irrepressible canine. He has adjusted remarkably well to being a “tri-pod”…he’s even mastered going up and down tall stairs. With an all-in, totally-can-do attitude, Woody will not let anything stand in his way. Like all dogs, he will need regular physical activity. Leashed walks, interactive outdoor activities, and adventurous outings shared with family members will meet most of this guy’s exercise needs. A secure, fenced yard for outdoor romping and exploring would be an awesome bonus for him too.

Woody is best suited as an indoor pet and companion for a home with a moderately-active lifestyle. While he has shown himself to get along well with, and enjoy the company of other dogs he has been properly introduced to, a home visit and a meet-n-greet with any housemate pets will be required prior to adoption. He does not appear to be overly excitable around cats either. We think Woody would be comfortable around children of all ages too, and he’d do well in just about any home where children and pets alike are taught to respect boundaries and interaction is monitored as it should be.

You can meet Woody at Monroe SPCA adoption events and by pre-arrangement with approved Adoption Application.
