My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DOB July 5, 2009
Sally has a very gentle, passive personality. She is warm, demonstrative, and very affectionate. Because of her size, she is quite sedentary but can move quickly, and jump, if necessary. She is quite shy and likes to have a place where she can retreat to so that she can keep watch on what is going on. She loves to be petted and caressed, showing her appreciation by headbutting, moving against your hands, and purring very loudly. She loves a good assertive brushing, though she can be excited and react by grabbing you if she appreciates the attention or swatting at you, if she doesn't.

Sally is quite standoffish with my other cats, always ceding authority to them, keeping a close watch on what they are up to. Sally also has a strong cat character as my cats leave her alone, showing her some respect. It is mutual respect rather than close friendship.

As she is overweight, Sally has been on a satiety diet for six weeks, which means that she rarely feels hungry. She is now on a dry “indoor cat, weight control” kibble, which she eats though she yearns for the wet foods. Sally is an 'emotional eater' so she will scarf a whole bowl of food unless it is doled out to her in manageable portions.

Because of her weight. she needs attention for activation and stimulation so that she can become more active and inquisitive.

Funny quirks: Sally is a shy, stand-offish cat, spending much of her time lying down off by herself. However, when she feels the need of some personal time, and especially if she is hungry, she will become very up close and personal, very vocal in expressing her hunger. Once she has your attention, she cannot get enough of your time and touch, keeping it up until you have had enough.

Because of her size, she doesn't really like being picked up and held, finding it hard to get comfortable, making her anxious (She hates having her picture taken!).

History: Sally was surrendered because her owner was no longer able to care for her. Though clearly much loved and appreciated, Sally appeared to have been neglected, in that she had grown obese, eating only wet food. She was no longer very mobile so that her nails had grown excessively long and she was no longer able to clean and groom herself satisfactorily, particularly her hind quarters. Because of her lack of mobility and obesity, Sally was experiencing some problems with her kidney and liver function. While being fostered, she has lost some weight, is groomed regularly and uses the scratch pad to keep her nails trim. She is increasingly cleaning and grooming herself as she is able, and her general health seems excellent.

Special note from her foter family: I took in Sally as a foster cat as she had such a 'sad sack' expression, with little to attract one's attention. She didn't seem to have any of the beauty, personal qualities or character quirks that make any cat appealing.

Having lived with Sally for six weeks, I really appreciate her beauty, her lovely colouring, thick soft fur, her shy demeanor but quite strong cat personality. Don't forget, Sally spent years in a home where she was loved but where people didn't pay much attention to her. If you show her love and attention, she responds glowingly.
