Hi all, I’m Jack, an impossibly cute 9 yr old 14 lb male Maltese/Terrier mix. I am looking for a new home due to my owner's divorcing. That is not a bad thing though as my current owner works long hours and I am alone much of the day. When I know I am about to be left alone, I hide under the bed or the couch to comfort myself.
When I was a puppy, I was a naturally friendly and outgoing dog, even with strangers. But at the age of one, my current owner started disciplining me by holding up a hand or slipper as if he is about to hit me. This caused me to be wary and fearful of approaching hands. I also learned from him that I could keep unwelcome hands away by growling, snapping or even biting. As a result I have become an aloof dog over the years and have become skilled at entertaining myself by playing with my toys and “grooming” my stuffed animals.
Of course I do have my affectionate side where I will seek out attention. I very much like being held, just not caressed or petted. I am also very playful. My favorite game is for my owner to chase me around while throwing a ball or toy for me.
Despite my age I am an active boy. I love my walks and with my medium-high energy level need two good ones a day. I am not friendly to other people and dogs on my walks and will bark at any we meet. Sharp noises, clapping or loud laughing terrify me as well and I will bury myself in your arms for comfort and protection.
I desperately need an experienced, patient, and understanding owner who will respect my space and will let me decide when I want cuddle time. Perhaps my new owner will be able to help me feel comfortable with being stroked again. Perhaps they will be able to make me feel safe by taking on a leadership role with me. Perhaps their calm assertive behavior will help me lose my fears and insecurities. But my adopters need to understand and accept that I may remain somewhat aloof, fearful of strangers and uncomfortable with being pet for the rest of my life and will still be kind, caring and loving towards me. Will you be my rescue angel? I badly need one.
I am a very healthy dog with no medical conditions. I am housetrained, neutered and am up to date vaccinations as of March 2016. My adoption fee is $200.
