My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Wesley Westie was pulled from a high kill shelter in Houston, where he was turned in alongside another pup of similar age who we also now have, Colin Collie. It is hard to imagine what exactly their life was up to that point, but they were emotional wrecks at the shelter, scared to even stand and trembling with fear. We got them out, put them into foster in Texas for a while, and having come into their own they recently arrived to Rhode Island.

What a nice change from both! Wesley is a pert and very sweet boy with a very big heart. He is wonderful company, will sit by your feet, follow you around, give marvelous greetings at the door, jump to your knees for attention. He however is suspicious of tough and will dart away with approaches from the hand. His friend Colin Collie is more significantly touch phobic whereas Wesley knows how to appreciate cheek scratches and gentle pats on his head, but if reached for he will dart away.

That makes him a fairly quirky rescue pup, for he is incredibly friendly and loves to engage. He crates very well, gets along with everyone (dogs of every size, and he seems fine around kids) and has no sharpness to him, but his adopter will need patience and understanding to undergo a long process with a dog who does not trust the extended hand.

Wesley currently is a moderate marker, but this may be partly him settling in and in addition he was recently neutered, so the behavior has potential to improve. We would not recommend him for the house proud for this reason, however. He will do fine in a multi dog setting. He is not recommended for first time adopters. As he is very adept at darting away, he cannot be off leash outside at this time, for any reason.

If you would like to take on about as charming a project dog as there can be, Wesley may be the boy for you. Clicker users are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications are available on the southpawsexpress.org website, or by contacting Lucy at maramuser@gmail.com. His adoption fee is $450.
