My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

YOU MUST HAVE AN APPROVED APPLICATION IN ORDER TO SET UP A TIME TO MEET OUR PETS.

Pikachu is an absolutely doll of a girl who looks very much like an Affenpinscher but with soft fur and a fluffy tail. She has a wonderfully easy going, sociable, loving personality. She takes everything in stride and so far, has been totally comfortable everywhere we have taken her. She has a delightfully trusting nature.

She is a snuggler and likes to be close by her people or on a lap but is not demanding. She is normally quiet but can dance around and bark in fun when you act silly and get her all excited! She will flop over for wriggly tummy rubs, too.

When we first met her, she was in truly awful shape and she still has a bit of a journey to go but has made amazing progress. It is hard to tell from her Sept. 1 pictures, but she is still very skinny. She was literally skin and bones and fur when we took her into rescue and we still had to have emergency surgery done since it turned out this tiny little pup had one humongous bladder stone, about the size of a small egg. It probably filled her bladder and could have been lethal. We got her just in time!

She feels so much better now and is as happy as can be and getting around just fine. We had to feed her with a syringe at first but now she is eating everything in sight and slowly gaining back some much needed weight. She adores treats and will come running for them and she will stare at you while you are eating with those big eyes.

She was feeling perky so we took her for a nice little stroll in the Bicentennial Gardens Sept. 1 and she had a wonderful time. She loved meeting everyone and was completely sweet and calm with all the new friendly dogs and people. She was so happy to be out and about!

She is perfect on the leash, adjusting her speed to yours and patiently waiting if you stop to chat to someone.

Pikachu is great in the car and acts like she has gone for fun car rides many times before in her life. She settles down immediately and just enjoys the ride. As she gains strength, she will hop in and out like a pro.

She is excellent sharing her space with other sweet, calm little dogs. She does not care to play with other dogs and can find playful, energetic dogs annoying. People are her priority and she would be fine as an only dog.

She was also 100% comfortable visiting a foster home, like she has always been a beloved pet in a home. She can run up and down stairs just fine. She is completely comfortable and relaxed with being picked up and carried around. Pikachu acts like she had a normal puppyhood and good home before she fell on hard times.

As you can see in her pictures, she is wearing a just-in-case diaper since she just had bladder surgery and, due to irritation and healing, still needs to potty frequently, including a middle of the night potty break.

She would probably be a good candidate for pee pad or potty box training. You will need to invest in disposable doggie diapers while her bladder is recovering to prevent boo boos. She is very cooperative with using diapers.

We will have complete blood work done on her 2 weeks post op (mid Sept) to make sure there was no organ damage done by that huge stone. She still wears out quickly and likes to take it easy, but otherwise acts like her innards feel great and are functioning well. She is just so skinny and deconditioned but getting better every day. We will keep you updated!

She is not quite ready for her new home but if you want to come meet her and see if she is the dog for you, you are welcome to do that.

Physically, she is a work in progress, but her personality is just about perfect and we adore this little girl. She is sure to delight her new owners and she is the kind of pup who acclimates very quickly so that you start out feeling like she has always been with you.

Depending on what her blood work and vet visit show in a few weeks, we may find that she may need a bit more medical follow up, but she is such a joy to have around, you will find that any additional expenses that may crop up over the years (such as a special diet, routine bloodwork, pee pads) will be well worth it.

We think she is about 7 years old but it is so hard to tell when pups come to us in such bad shape. They seem to grow younger as they gain weight, their coats take on a shine from good nutrition, and their spirits soar as they feel better and become healthier. She currently weighs 7.5 pounds but definitely needs to gain more weight!
