Tessie is typical of the Affen breed in the sense that she follows her humans all around the house to keep an eye on them. She is not the type of girl to jump on your lap and shower you with kisses, but if you calmly and gently approach her to pick her up and cuddle her, she welcomes it. She does love to sit on the sofa with you in the evenings and would love to sleep in bed with you at night. She is learning how to jump up on the sofa and bed when invited, but still asks you to pick her up sometimes. She hasn’t learned to navigate long flights of stairs yet, so has to be carried up and down.
Tessie needs a patient, gentle adopter with a quiet adult only home, few hours alone, a small dog companion and a securely fenced yard. Previous dog experience is strongly preferred. She is quite a little homebody and does not appreciate road trips, even short ones, but is learning to tolerate them. She startles easily and must be protected from bolting as she is a flight-risk when frightened. She must always be securely harnessed and leashed when outside a fenced area and crated or seat belted in the back seat when in a vehicle. She is house trained, and would do best with someone who works from home so she can go outside often. She will use a puppy pad when necessary, but usually aims for the edge, which requires a bit of cleanup. She walks well on leash and enjoys walks in quiet areas.
Tessie’s birthday is July 31, 2007 and she weighs just 13 pounds. She is being fostered near Burlington Iowa and we prefer to place her within a short driving distance. She is spayed, UTD on vaccinations, micro chipped, heartworm negative and taking preventative. Our dogs may never be shipped in cargo and we do not transport them to adoptive homes. They are never placed in homes with invisible (electric) fencing or with intact dogs. Doggy doors are OK as long as they are secured at night and when you are gone. Tessie is small enough to be carried away by a coyote or other predator so may never be left outside alone. Being a short nosed breed, Affenpinschers are sensitive to extreme heat and cold, so care must be taken when you are outside with her on very hot and very cold days.
