My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Slim Shady was a wee little puppy on a street corner by himself when someone found him and brought him to the county pound as a stray. He was blind and very sick and nearly dead. County called Rotten Rottie Rescue and asked us to come right away and take him because they did not have the medical care that he needed to save his life. So we rushed to get him and had in in front of our vet within an hour. Diagnostic testing was done and it was determined that Slim has juvinille diabetes. He is two and half years old now. He had corrective surgery on his eyes and he can see extremely well now. His ophthalmologist will tell you his vision is perfect. Click on the Tv icon to see a video of when Slim had his surgery! He does need to have drops in his eyes once a day which he doesn't mind at all. He will just sit there and let you put them in. It's been a long road for Slim and us as we have fine tuned his his diabetic care and we have finally got him down to one shot of insulin in the morning. He does need to have his sugar tested several times a day to monitor where he is but as long as his schedule doesn't change much then that can become less frequent. Slim is a trouper when it comes to that too. Just ask him to lay down and he will lay still until he hears the monitor beeb indicating that you got a good reading. Slim has been professionally trained by Dynamic Dog Training AZ and his trainer is happy to teach you the best way to handle him. He has been remote collar trained on low levels and responds to the collar very well which makes him a pleasure to take out in public. Because slim was completely blind for the most part of his first year of life, he never really learned what other puppies learned when it came to playing with other dogs. If you are looking for a playmate for your dog, Slim is probably not your best choice. However with some work, he may be able to coexist with another large dog. Slim's perfect home would be able to satisfy this list

A calm home that doesn't have a lot of excitement and a family who follows the same routine on most days.
An owner that will take him for a walk every day or has a treadmill (yes slim already knows how to walk on one and you can get a treadmill dirt cheap for him. I'll even help you find him one for next to nothing)
An owner who is very responsible
An owner who is willing to learn about diabetes or maybe has diabetes themselves so that they can understand and help him stay regulated
A home without other animals
A home with a swimming pool because Slim loves to Swim
A home with a minimum of a 6 foot brick wall around the back yard because Slim could be an agility star
A family who has someone home with him a good part of the day, who is old enough and responsible enough to check his blood sugar and pay attention to the way he acts to determine if there may be a problem
A family who is not financially strapped because Slim can be expensive at times compared to other dogs. He needs to go to the vet and have blood tests done. He needs to have his eyes checked twice a year. Test strips, lancets, syringes, insulin all add up. So if you are struggling financially then Slim would not make a good choice for you.

Everybody who meets Slim loves him!! He has a lot of personality and he is smart and funny and well behaved and entertaining. We have a lot of time and love invested into this boy and only want what is best for him. We will be here for after adoption support as much as you need us. If you go out of town we are happy to babysit him. If you ate the type of person who loves taking care of animals and people, and like that others depend on you, then there is no better match for you then this guy here.

You should at least meet him before you cross him off your list because I have a feeling he will change your mind! If I could give an award for the best diabetic dog ever, it's slim. The things he has had to endure his whole life, like getting stuck with needles, his patience when a new person has to learn how to test him and having to get get poked more then necessary, and he just puts up with it although I know it hurts him. Those are special qualities you just don't see too often in a dog. Slim is a special boys in many ways and he wants his true forever home. He has been waiting in foster care for 2.5 years for that dream. Won't you make his dream come true?
