My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

This handsome boy is Dennis, or as we affectionately call him, Denny. He is a 35 pound pure bred Beagle. His coloring is known as lemon, which consists of a combination of brown and white as opposed to the typical tri colored beagle that has brown black and white. Dennis came to us from a local shelter. He was originally found at a kennel where his owner dropped him off and never came back for him. How anyone could leave this precious boy is hard to understand because of how great of a dog he is.

Dennis is fully house trained and has never had an accident since living with his foster family. He will let you know he needs to do his business by crying at the door to let him outside. Dennis is also crate trained, he spends his time in there while I am at work and sleeps in there overnight. At first, he was reluctant to go in his crate and made it very clear to us that he preferred to sleep in the bed. I would often find him curled up on my bed near my pillows and he would look at me with those sad eyes as if to say “please can I sleep with you tonight?” Now however, Dennis will willingly go into his crate and often seeks it out when he needs some quiet time.

It became clear when we welcomed Dennis into our foster family, that being abandoned has truly affected him. He is always by my side wanting to cuddle and doesn’t like to let me out of his sight. When leaving the house, he tends to cry and bark in his crate for a short while before settling down. This boy does not like to be left alone. However, he has made a tremendous amount of progress as he continues to settle in. If you work long hours where he will be spending too much time in his crate, then this dog may not be a good match for you. He loves people so much, that he will often cry when anyone leaves, even if he has only known them for a couple minutes. He needs to be with a family that will never abandon him like he was in the past, and will provide him with a forever home.

Because Dennis is a hound, long walks and plenty of exercise is ideal for him. Dennis walks well on a leash and truly enjoys his daily walks. He jumps for joy when he sees his leash and runs to the door. Hounds have an incredible sense of smell, with the Beagle breed coming second best next to the Bloodhound. Because of this, Dennis will have his nose to the ground for the majority of the walk, sniffing and following a scent most of the way. When Dennis is hot on a track and finds a squirrel/chipmunk he will “point” and then lunge forward to chase it. This is where the walk can get tricky with almost any hound. Their instincts can over take them and if let off leash, Dennis will chase a small animal to Timbuktu before even noticing you’re gone. It is therefore very important never to let him off leash unless it is a fenced in area.

Dennis has met plenty of other dogs and has never come across one that he doesn’t like. He is currently being fostered with another dog and a cat and shows little interest in either of them. He does not chase the cat but he will sometimes curiously sniff her until she bats him away. Toys don’t necessarily intrigue Dennis but he loves treats and bones that take him awhile to chew. He knows basic commands such as sit stay and lay down and is easily trainable as long as there’s food around. He also does well in the car. He loves to stick his head out the window and let those big ears catch some wind. He gets quite excited to go into the car and does not disturb you while your driving.

Dennis would do well in any sort of home. He does very well with kids and would make a great family dog. He is so easy to get along with that there wouldn’t be any sort of restrictions for what type of home he is looking for. He likes to be around people and is incredibly loyal and affectionate. When sitting on the couch, he will often come up and put both his paws on your shoulders as if he’s giving you a big hug. Dennis also thinks he is the size of a lap dog, often climbing and sitting on my lap with no regards to his actual size and weight. He is a big suck and is always looking for affection.

This beautiful boy will melt your heart the minute you lay eyes on him. His big eyes and floppy ears make him irresistible. His happy-go-lucky personality will cheer you up on the worst of days and his joyful nature is truly contagious. He deserves a forever home where he will get plenty of attention, exercise and snuggles. If you are looking for an easy going and happy companion, then Dennis could be the dog for you!
