Cabela here, I’m a purdy 2 year old tri colored spayed female, hound mix. I was brought to the shelter when after I wondered up to a nice families’ home. I’m not entirely sure how I ended up so far away from home, you see when you’re a hound dog like me you tend to just follow your nose. It’s easy to lose track of time and where you are. You would think I could track my way home but I’d circled and twirled so many times I almost tied my tail in a knot! So I was really lucky these nice people helped me find my way here to the shelter where I was safe. I waited for my people to come but they never did sadly so I made a deal with the nice people here that they would help me find a new family and during the time it took them to find me a family I would be their dog treat quality control checker. They giggled at me a little but in the end they agreed! So it’s a great arrangement, I check all the dog treats that come in to be sure that they aren’t expired or disgusting and they are helping me find a loving family who is looking to add a purdy gurl like me to their home. So if you think you might need a dog treat checker in your home or even a human food checker (Except the bad foods like that chocolate stuff I can’t check it for ya) then I’m on the lookout for a home and I’d be happy to fill the position! Come on down and see me!

About Humane Society of Southern Illinois

About Our Shelter...

The Humane Society of Southern Illinois has been around for almost 60 years. We are mainly funded through donations and every little bit helps.

Our facility takes in approximately 5,000 animals yearly and we do the best we can to find homes for them.

In December, 2005 the Humane Society of Southern Illinois began an exciting new program to save pets from euthanasia.

We began working with several independent rescue coordinators to place adoptable animals in high quality "no kill" programs in the northern part of the state that would otherwise be euthanized.

As always, this would never have been possible without the kind and generous donations of our members and supporters. Please donate to help sustain this vital Life Saving program!

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our shelter is located in between Carbondale and Murphysboro, Illinois just off of route 13. We are open every day except Tuesdays and holidays. Our hours are Monday through Saturday from 12:00 pm until 4:30 pm, Sunday from 1:00 pm until 4:30 pm, and closed Tuesdays and holidays.

Our Adoption Process...

Adoptions fees vary depending on what of companion animal you decide to adopt from us. Sometimes our shelter receives animals other than cats and dogs. It is not uncommon to find rabbits, guinea pigs, or ferrets seeking new homes.

Dogs: $200 Dogs over 6 years or special needs $150
Cats: $100 Cats over 6 years or special needs $80
Rabbits & Ferrets: $100
Others vary

All animals must be spayed/neutered and rabies vaccinated before they can go home. If these procedures are not already done at the time of adoption, an appointment must be made and the cost of these procedures CAN be included in the cost of adoption under most circumstances which will be discussed at the time of adoption.

The potential adopter has to fill out a pre-adoption application before any adoption is finalized. The staff at our facility will go through the application with you to make sure your home is the best home possible for our shelter babies. Our first and foremost concern is for the happiness and welfare of the companion animals in our care.

For any other questions regarding the adoption process, please contact our shelter at 618 457 2362. We will try to answer any questions you may have.
