My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Say hello to sweet Elka!

Elka is approx 4 years old. She was found, near death, in a ditch, filthy and starving. She was too weak to even stand on her own, but still managed to wag her tail and give kisses at the site of help. This fragile girl was just a shadow image of the dog she was meant to be. Elka was so underweight, she actually fit in a cat litter pan. That's where she chose to sleep when she was first picked up by animal control, so she was given a blanket and curled up tightly for the probably the first night of real sleep she had in quite a while. She was finally safe.

Since then, we welcomed Elka into our RARE program and she has been thriving in foster care. She is now a healthy 53 pounds and has proved to be an absolute doll with kids and people. She can be choosy with other dogs and gets along best with submissive dogs. Elka is completely crate trained and loves napping in her crate for some down time, but she also does very well in the house.

Elka did test positive for heart-worms but is in the midst of treatment and doing fabulously! Heart-worms are only transmitted by a mosquitoes and are NOT simply contagious to other dogs through saliva or blood. Keeping your dog on prevention is imperative to keeping your dog heart-worm negative. Fortunately, heart worms are treatable and preventable. Please contact us if you would like more information to understand heart-worms better and Elka's current treatment, which is covered by RARE and no additional cost to his adopter. Elka deserves to be adopted and is looking forward to being heart-worm free!

If you would like to make Elka part of your family, please apply online at www.RuralAnimalRescueEffort.org/adopt-foster

~Our adoption fees not only help the animal being adopted, but they also help to cover heart-worm treatments and other treatable ailments that many animals, that would otherwise be euthanized, need to be made available for adoption.~

Thank You for choosing to adopt.
