Here's what the humans have to say about me:
**SEEKING EXPERIENCED TRAINER OR RESCUER ONLY - PLEASE READ FULL BIO BELOW BEFORE CONTACTING US**
We know he’s handsome enough that everyone will want him, but this stunning guy needs a special home with a dog-savvy type who also have interest in training or significant experience with abused, fear-aggressive dogs.
Tanner's ideal home would include calm, quiet acreage, perhaps a nice farm life as he has been exposed to animals of all kinds and is reasonably respectful. Unfortunately, Tanner currently resides in Atlanta and farms, much less experienced dog homes are quite hard to come by here. While we'd love to find him a home here, so he can continue to work with his current trainers, we encourage out-of-state applicants with significant training experience or a willingness to hire a local trainer.
Despite his behavioral challenges, we do believe Tanner would be a loyal friend to the patient type of dog lover(s), who are willing to kind of ignore him at first and earn his trust gradually. He will let you know when he is starting to trust and feels ready to be the carefree dogs that exists deep inside. Trust is earned with Tanner, but he can be a true retriever when he's finally at ease.
Tanner was adopted from a county animal control as a pup and unfortunately, abused. Neighbors witnessed him being struck by both his adopter and her children. From there, he went to a couple of other ‘not quite right’ foster homes that may have added to his insecurity. Sadly, Tanner looks at every new person as a potential threat until they prove otherwise, and he is absolutely terrified of children. Even the sound of their voices stresses him out. A calm, child-free home/yard/neighborhood is key to his success.
We've seen socialization training work very well for dogs like Tanner and see him as a young fella, destined to blossom, but he needs someone willing to give a dog a chance! Please apply if you might e the one.
