My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please read dog’s entire written bio before contacting rescue. To inquire about this dog, you do not need to press any special buttons on this website. Send a regular e-mail to Janet Cook at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. Please provide some information about your home, family and other pets. Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue is a private, foster home based rescue. Though there are some steps that precede meeting a dog, they are quick and expeditious. Thank you!

Calvin is a Chihuahua mix, mixed with possibly Miniature Pinscher or Dachshund (or both) and is about age two and weighs about 7.2 lbs. He was rescued from the Ramona Animal Shelter after having been there for one month. Calvin became quite skinny at the shelter, as the shelter is a stressful environment and he was competing with other dogs in his kennel run for food. We have worked to put a bit of weight on him, and he is now looks great! Calvin is a gem of a dog, so friendly and happy!! He loves people more than anything, men, women, and kids. He will say hello to every person we run into, whether at the dog park or on a neighborhood walk. Calvin will run right up to any stranger and gladly give kisses and cuddles. In fact, at the dog park, when most dogs make their rounds greeting all the pups, Calvin is making his rounds saying Hi to all their owners. He will gladly take a spot on the lap of anyone who will let him and be as happy as can be!

Calvin is fine with all dogs big and small, but is neutral when it comes to them. He does not seek them out to play, but he does not mind having them around as long as it is not crazy puppy energy in his face which gets him barking in annoyance. But he will gladly share pet beds or even hang out on the big bed with another calm dog. He loves a good squeaky toy! Given the right siblings, Calvin could easily fall into the household routine and make new friends with an inviting mellow pup.

His eagerness to have happy humans has made Calvin very easy to train. In less than one week, he went from never walking on leash, or using a dog door, or going up and down stairs, to mastering all three! He now runs up and down stairs, jumps in and out of the car, and is very obedient on the leash. We consider Calvin to be a pretty smart pup, but he also loves treats, which makes it easy for him to learn new things. Calvin is potty-trained and does not mark in the house (however potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment). He has mastered the doggy door, where he has a potty patch he uses regularly on a condo balcony, and he also takes care of business almost on demand the moment he is taken out on leash. He is crate-trained, but is not crazy about the crate. However, note that Calvin does sleep quietly in a little wire crate every night as long as the crate is positioned in the bedroom near the people.

No amount of cute videos or pics can show you Calvin’s engaging personality until you meet this little guy. He seems adaptable to any living situation, as long as he does not spend long days at home alone. Even when he has been left home, he is well behaved and does not cry or bark (his foster mom has a camera, so she checks in often and he just finds a soft spot on the couch or in a dog bed). Just be prepared when you come home to him; he will require some immediate hellos and kisses and petting, which you surely will not be able to resist when you see how excited he is for your return!

Calvin is neutered, micro-chipped, dewormed, and is current on shots including rabies. If you are interested in Calvin, please contact Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com.
