Facts about Maximo

  • Breed: Shepherd (Unknown Type) Mix
  • Color: Brindle - With White
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
  • Sex: Male
Maximo is an adult male dog approximately 4 or 5 years old. Poor Maximo was found by himself with no food and no water alone in his owner’s house in Puerto Rico when his owner passed away. Máximo is a big hunk of love, literally – he needs to loose some weight. Currently he is 49 pounds, but with food portioning and regular exercise he should gradually slim down to about 35 pounds. Maximo is very shy but with a good home or a foster he will do wonderfully and show his true personality soon. He is good with children and other animals, and should do well in a quieter household to start out. Maximo has all his vaccines and is neutered.

Update 11/7/16: Maximo is definitely feeling at home in San Francisco. He was a big hit with people at the adoption events this past weekend, with a lot of people stopping by to pet him and admire how cute he is. There's just something irresistible about the one ear up and one ear down look, not to mention his tail that curls over his back! Maximo did wonderfully with other dogs, and had a great time playing with Troya and Sol the other two dogs that recently arrived from Puerto Rico. People and children that stopped by to visit were all greeted by Maximo and his wagging tail. He was practicing a "One Kiss," policy for the day, stopping by each hand and getting petted, then rewarding his fans with just one kiss! After he made the round of all the hands, he started again, everyone could pet him and then they got a "One Kiss" reward for their kindness. This was great fun to watch, no favoritism was shown to anyone in particular, everyone was loved equally!

This fun loving boy is learning to walk on a leash, this was not required of him before. Once he gets his leash skills mastered, he's going to want to go out and meet the public, he's no longer the shy fellow he once was. He's a happy go lucky kind of guy, not hyperactive, but enough energy to go for long walks and enjoy life with you.

About Wonder Dog Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Wonder Dog Rescue has a long history of rescuing dogs in need! Our founder, Linda Beenau, was introduced to rescue in 1992. She assisted Nancy Ford, a long-time Boston and Pug rescuer. Over time she formed Bay Area Boston Terrier Rescue. As time went on, the group grew, and began helping dogs of all sizes, shapes and breeds. Wonder Dog Rescue is the synthesis of this progression.

We are a dedicated volunteer group, serving the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, and rescuing dogs from all over Northern and Central California. Wonder Dog Rescue has saved blind and deaf dogs, puppies as young as two weeks and seniors as old as 15! We offer hospice to special needs and elderly dogs, caring for them until the end of their lives. Each animal has so much to offer… and we learn so much by opening our hearts to these deserving companions.

When a dog comes into rescue he or she is evaluated carefully. All dogs receive vaccinations and are spayed or neutered, and some dogs receive additional medical care or behavior modification. We work with each dog, giving them the love and structure they need to move onward. Dogs stay in foster homes until they are matched with their ideal family. We want these adoptions to be life long, and take this very seriously!

Volunteers help in the transporting of dogs from shelters, socializing & walking, bathing, fostering and assisting at mobiles. Email us if you have even two hours a week and want to make a real difference in these animals' lives.... you won't be sorry!

Come Meet Our Pets...

You are invited to come to our Mobile Adoptions every Saturday! Locations may vary, please see our website for location and time.

Thank you!

Our Adoption Process...

We adopt dogs to homes in Northern California. Very few exceptions are made, and we never ship dogs. We receive many wonderful applications from people in the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Southern California. The issue with long-distance placements is this: We have no reliable way of getting the dog back to us if the adoption falls through. For this reason we must deny these applicants.

Adopters will sign a contract stating that the dog is to be returned to rescue if they are unable to keep the animal. We will take a dog back at ANY time. It is our deep commitment to these animals that they not be returned to shelters. We will also provide you lifelong assistance.... Please contact us at any time with questions about health, nutrition and behavior. We'd rather meet up with you and do some needed training than to have you surrender the dog. Adoptions are a life-long commitment. We are here to help you fulfill the promise to your new dog.

Dog Adoption Fees

Questions about adoption fees are often the first we hear when speaking with potential adopters. We'd love to take a moment to break it down for you! Adoption fees can vary, depending on medical issues, age, breed and medical condition of the dog. Special exceptions are made for senior dogs and for families with special circumstances. Donations above the "fee" amount are considered tax-deductible by law.

Adoption fees for DOGS are a sliding scale, generally between $250 and $350. We will always try to lower the fee if you have special needs. PUPPIES and certain dogs may have higher adoption fees..... this is merely due to the costs associated with doing rescue.
