Zach is a beautiful 10 year old male German Shepherd that was found stray and taken to the shelter. He is fairly skinny (61 lbs) and would normally weigh-in around 70 lbs for his frame.

Zach is a very affectionate and loves to have have his neck and the side of his face gently rubbed... He also takes treats very gently, but is not exceptionally food motivated.

In spite of his 10 year age and his time in the shelter he is very alert, moves well and is quite mobile. Zach walks pretty good on a shelter "slip" leash but did much better with our evaluator when a martingale leash was used.

While at the shelter in one of the play yards, he met (separately) two other younger, more exuberant dogs through the fence of the adjacent play yard. Zach stayed quite calm during the meeting and showed a nice wagging tail. He sniffed noses and then walked away. GOOD BOY!

Zach does seem to have some vision issues due to cataracts. The cataracts do impair his vision and when first moving around in a new area, he is cautious and will swing his head from side to side to see as much as he is able to as he moves forward.

Zach rode nicely in our transport car. He was very quiet, but seemed a little unsettled because he couldn't see very well. He spent a total of 2 hours in the car without incident however.

We are still learning more about Zach so we will be updating his bio with more details as we learn them.

Zach has been accepted into the GSRNC Thulani Program and he will be headed to a Thulani Foster home where he will receive lots of the normal comforts of home as he settle in. The Thulani Program will also see that he receives updated vaccinations and other medical care necessary to his well being. In addition, The Thulani Program is starting a search for his next adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life. He will also come with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.

Zach's medical expenses will be covered for the rest of his life by The Thulani Program!

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption process is designed to help you and the right dog find each other. Our goal is to place each dog into a permanent, safe, and loving home.

To adopt a German Shepherd Dog from us, you must:

1. Live in Northern California.
2. Complete an Adoption Questionnaire, either online, or by mail. If you do not own your home, you must also have your landlord complete the Landlord Letter.
3. Be interviewed by an adoption counselor.
4. Allow a home visit by an adoption counselor.
5. Be approved for adoption.
6. Choose, and be chosen by, the right dog.
7. With our approval, sign our Adoption Agreement.

After we receive your online Adoption Questionnaire, we will call you to begin the adoption process. We encourage potential adopters to come to one or more Adoption Days, because that is the best way to meet several German Shepherds and to find your new companion. If you attend an Adoption Day and choose a dog, you may be able to adopt the same day, if all adoption requirements are met.

If you cannot come to any Adoption Day, we can still assist you, this may take longer because the people who will help you are volunteers who usually have jobs, and scheduling meetings with dogs can be complex because our dogs live in many homes and kennels.

We do not adopt to homes outside of Northern California.
