About Homeward Hounds of Wisconsin, inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

Coonhounds are high energy dogs that need daily exercise in order to stay mentally active and physically fit. Conventional shelters have difficulty dedicating the time or staffing it takes to properly facilitate healthy and happy coonhounds.

Coonhounds make great pets because they are calm, gentle, and playful with families and other dogs. Coonhounds range in weight from 45 pounds to 80 pounds. Coonhounds come in a variety of types including, red bone, black and tan, blue-tick, treeing walker, red-tick, and the plott hound. Because most coonhounds were bred to be hunting dogs, they have a strong prey drive and must always be in a contained area, or walked on a leash. With dedicated training, coonhounds can master many commends and be taught off leash limits. They need daily exercise and can play for hours, but once they have had it, they can relax for hours
All coonhounds are housed in our family setting, complete with children of all ages, other pets of all sizes, learning basic commands and behavior needed to help transition into a permanent home. Coonhounds are “pulled” from shelters all over Wisconsin and given the best environment to strive in until a forever home is found.

We limit the amount of coonhounds we have in our care in order to provide necessary individual
attention and training coonhounds require.

We take pride in our family environment and the ability to provide proper exercise and space
that is needed to keep coonhounds physically and mentally healthy.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Since our dogs are in foster homes and in family settings, our dogs are seen by appointment. Many family are happy to accommodate potential adopters by working around schedules.

Due to the nature of our rescue, all visits and inquiries are done by appointment only. Please email or contact through facebook to set up a appointment if you are interested in adopting a hound or interested in ways to volunteer.

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption process is fairly similar to other like rescues. We have a brief paper (or via email) questionnaire, and communicate via phone, email, Facebook messenger, and text. We require meet and greets with all family members, vet reference check, a home check , and continued verbal support of dogs life. We do have a legal contract stating the dog will be returned to use if adopted can no longer care for. Our adoption fees are similar to others in our community. All our dogs are fully vetted, sterilized, and records fully provided.
