My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

This adorable boy is Remmy. He is a 4 year old male German Shepherd/Corgi cross with the most gentle temperament. He is a medium size dog, about 45lbs, with an athletic body and a wonderful disposition. He definitely has the look of the Shepherd but has adorable shorter legs, one ear that stands up and one the flops which makes him look even cuter than he already is. When he greets you or really wants something he has a big body wiggle. Remmy needs a fun and loving family, as he will give his new family exactly that.

Remmy was picked up by a rural animal control facility where he was an unclaimed stray. When we got him he was malnourished and his fur so dirty as well you could tell he was sprayed by a skunk some time ago. We are working on getting his weight up and have given him a few baths, which has made a world of difference for him. We think he was not in a happy household prior as he was very neglected and by the wear of his front paw pads it seems that they were worn down by scratching at a door or kennel. When Remmy first arrived here in his foster home he was extremely cautious; an uncertain boy, however has come a long way since being here. He has learned that everyone in the household is kind and that being in a house is pretty great. It didn’t take him long to get comfortable in the house and understand his daily routine. He just needs you to lead him so he knows what is expected of him.

Remmy likes to cuddle and welcomes attention from everyone. If you want to go out he is right by your side; if you want to just relax he will relax with you. Remmy is completely house trained and has quite a strong bladder, no accidents since the first day we brought him home. He will let you know when he wants out. If you decide to crate him he is fine with that, he lays down right away and sleeps through the night. We have had him out of the crate as well overnight and during the day while we are gone. He doesn’t get into mischief at all. Remmy would do well in any home situation, as long as he is not left outside all the time. He is now a greatly loved house dog and this is the role we expect him to continue in. He is an easy dog to live with and as such he would be the perfect first pet for anyone.

It would be good if he was not alone for the whole day by himself, especially if he is the only dog in the household. He is being fostered in a home where someone is home more than not and this works very well for him. Remmy is being fostered with another dog and teenage boys. We do not know how he would be with cats, but we do have guinea pigs and he really pays no attention to them, just curious when they are noisy in their cage. Remmy would do well with any family. He won’t be picky, would welcome a family with children, another dog and even a couple looking for their first dog to love. Really he is so good he will adapt to any new family, you will just need to be patient, let him know he is loved and treat him like a family member. We have been able to socialize Remmy with a group of dogs and he is super good. He greets them calmly, with no aggression at all. He loves his walks whether they are 1/2 hour or an hour. Remmy is not an overly active dog, he loves his run around time and walks but isn’t the type of dog you need to worry about running off his energy. He plays fetch, chase, likes all toys and just laying by your side while sitting out.

Remmy will need to go to dog training sessions. Not because he really needs it to behave, but more to bond with this new family and for socialization. It’s apparent that his previous family did very little with him so attending school will be great for him to expand his horizons, bond strongly with his people, and learn a few things along the way. He is good at walking; he is not a big puller so we just have him on a regular collar. He just likes to check his surroundings out; he is a big sniffer. Once he is familiar with his new family and more training he could be great for off leash trails, biking etc… as he doesn’t wander far. He is coming along with obedience training, he is still learning and slow at it but he comes and sits and waits. We work with him daily just to see what other surprises he has, as he is such a good boy and seems to know and do everything we ask of him. That’s why we feel he would be ok to go to first time dog owners as he is just so fantastic! He doesn’t have any bad habits, no jumping up on tables, no barking (a little when we leave the door), and whatever else is bad, he doesn’t do it! Doggie training will help to keep him on this great path.

On a sad note, Remmy has been diagnosed with heartworm disease and lyme disease. His previous owner obviously didn’t have him on the preventative which would have ensured he was protected from these diseases. Heartworm and Lyme disease are totally preventable diseases that are spread by mosquitoes and ticks. These diseases are in Southern Ontario and we are seeing more and more of them as each year passes. We are a rescue that heartworm and lyme tests all of the dogs we take in for exactly this reason. The good news is that Remmy is completely free of symptoms and is an otherwise healthy dog, and we are committed to treating this and will get him all better. He was diagnosed early on in the development and has an excellent chance of recovery. We have had other dogs in our program that have had heartworm and have treated those dogs successfully and all are living active and healthy lives. Remmy has no idea he has this disease and is in every way a happy dog. Remmy has been cleared to be adopted as there is no reason to hold him back. His adoptive family will need to be willing to work with us as we treat him for this and that will require approx. 3 trips to our vet in Cambridge over the span of a few months so it is not a huge time commitment. We will fully explain the treatment plan with potential adopters but in general he will get 1 injection of the medication in a few months and then a follow up of 2 injections in a month after. He needs to be rested and have limited exercise for a period of time after the injections but otherwise goes about his daily life. We will be responsible for the vet payments for his treatment; we just don’t see any reason why he can’t be adopted into a loving home while we go about getting rid of the nasty heartworms and managing his Lyme disease. We have had all of our heartworm/lyme dogs adopted during their treatments and it works out well for the dogs and the families. His adoptive family will need to live within a reasonable drive from Cambridge in order to get him to the vet for the appointments (which would be scheduled to suit the adoptive family). As for the Lyme disease, Remmy is on medicine now to lower his Lyme level and he is doing well on it. He won’t need to be on meds long term which is great. His adoptive family just needs to be aware of his Lyme status and advise their vet of it and understand that he will test positive for Lyme’s every time he has his heartworm/lyme tests done. Lyme disease cannot be cured, but it is managed quite effectively.

Remmy is looking for a family that will allow him to come into their lives 100%, allow him to spoil them with affectionate “kisses”, provide them with entertainment and show them unconditional love. He needs a kind person or people as he is a soft dog who can’t tolerate firm treatment. He is truly a gentle soul. If you can promise to give this beautiful boy unconditional love, totally commitment, a gentle warm heart and a life that he deserves Remmy would be the perfect dog for you.
