Hi, my name is Sugar and I am as sweet as my name implies. I am an 11 year old Shih Tzu that was surrendered to the Chesapeake Animal Shelter when my owners could no longer care for me. I was then transferred into a foster home due to some medical issues. You see, I had never been spayed so I developed a rather large mammary tumor that was very painful and uncomfortable which meant I wasn’t the easiest to be around. I have since been spayed and the tumor has been removed so now I am feeling much better and I’m ready to find my forever family. Even though there is a possibility that the tumor will grow back, I promise to be a great companion to anyone that will give me the chance.
I am a fun, easy going gal that loves belly rubs, being outside, going for walks, playing with toys, and taking long naps in a big comfy bed. I currently live with 2 mellow dogs my age and we all get along great. I haven’t been around cats in my foster home but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t mind sharing my home with them. My foster mom says that I am a lot of fun to be around and that anyone would be lucky to have me.

The perfect home for me would be an adult-only home or a home with older children. I would like a house full of soft beds, people who like snuggles, and yummy treats! I may be an older gal in need of some special TLC, but doesn’t every dog deserve that when she gets to be my age? Just imagine me greeting you at the door every day with my big brown eyes, and my joyful bark. How can you resist?

Those interested in me should email Before we can arrange a meeting interested applicants must complete an adoption application for approval.

About Chesapeake Humane Society

About Our Rescue Group...

Our Mission: The Chesapeake Humane Society works to promote the welfare of companion animals through programs and initiatives that reduce pet overpopulation, increase adoptions and encourage responsible pet guardianship through affordable pet care.

Our vision is to help pets and the people who love them find each other and stay together.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Please refer to the monthly calendar on our website for the most up to date schedule for adoption outings, spay/neuter/vaccine clinics, and fundraisers.

Our Adoption Process...

You are welcome to visit the animals in residence with us on a walk-in basis Tuesday through Saturday 10AM to 4PM. Sunday and Monday meetings are done by appointment only. Please feel free to call or email for an appointment to meet our adoptable pets.

The pets kept in residence are for the most part feline. If you are interested in meeting one of our canine adoption candidates an appointment must be made with their foster parent for a meeting.

We pride ourselves on offering one-on-one private adoption counseling. Once you have completed your adoption application (available at our front desk) an adoption counselor will contact you for a private interview.

Our adoption fees and requirements vary based on each individual animals needs. We work hand-in-hand with our adoption clients and hand-in-paw with our pets to make the best adoption matches.

In spite of our efforts, we understand that sometimes relationships fail. If at any time an adopter needs assistance with their new family member or finds it necessary to return their companion animal, we will respectfully work with that client to determine the best outcome for the animal.
