My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Do you love dogs that SMILE? Do you love silky soft smooth milk chocolate?
Then, Coco is your gal. Seriously, this lovely, somewhat shy, sweet dog literally smiles at you in greeting. All those pretty straight white teeth against her deep milk chocolate oh-so-soft fur is a beguiling sight.
Coco had a pretty rough start in life where whomever had her was clearly NOT VERY NICE to her. This means she is slow to trust new folks she meets, but will love you without reservation once she knows you are ok. The more positive experiences Coco has, the more her confidence will develop. Can you love Coco so she can be all she should be?
Coco loves all other dogs, especially those near to her size (approx.. 40 lbs) and about 18 inches tall (knee high on a short foster mom). It would be perfect if she has another well balanced dog to show her what being a dog is all about.
She is house trained and crate trained. While she will jump a baby gate to come find her foster mom, she is fool proof in the house. Coco will choose to go in her crate when she wants some quiet time.
Coco’s shyness with new people and situations requires that she go to a home that is NOT SO BUSY. Also, she needs an owner who is willing to take her through a basic obedience class to build her confidence. Coco has great manners….she simply needs the EXPERIENCES that a group obedience class would provide. It must be a class that is based on positive reinforcement not harsh discipline or loud vocal correction.
If you are seeking a smart, eager to please companion, then Coco is your girl.

The ideal home for this Real Good Dog will have a secure fenced yard. A solid history of excellent vet care for current or previous pets is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have specific breed experience.

Please visit www.realgoodrescue.com to submit an electronic application if you are interested in adopting this or any other Real Good Dog.

We adopt dogs from Memphis Animal Shelter when we can. The shelter has an 83% euthanasia rate, one of the highest in the country. Unfortunately, any dog coming from Memphis Animal Shelter, and most other shelters for that matter, will have been in contact with contagious illness. Even though the dogs have been in foster care and appear to be in good health, they may become stressed when changing environments and exhibit signs and symptoms of illness. If you have other pets, they need to be up to date on vaccines before bringing a shelter dog into your home. We will take the adopted animal back, but we are not responsible for your other animal's vet care. We always disclose where the dogs have come from. Please ask for any information about the dogs and exercise due caution if you have immunocompromised animals.
