Howdy! My name is Fiji. I am a 4 yr old female rainbow lorikeet. My personality is as bright and busy as my beautiful feathers!
My favorite toys are bright plastic balls and rings that I can hang upside down from. I also love to put on a show for my foster mom. I talk to her, play peekaboo, tug of war and lay on my back for tummy tickles. When I'm in the right mood I'll step up and beg for head scritches. I love head scritches! Like any performer I crave an audience and will let you know if I'm feeling under appreciated. I may be a little bird but I have a big voice. I haven't been around kids or other birds much so I don't know how I feel about them.
Lorikeets are nectar eaters in the wild and recreating this at home can be messy. I am currently eating Pretty Bird Lory pellets, daily, supplemented with nectar and lots of fresh fruits and veggies. I drink from a water bottle so that helps keep things a little cleaner. My droppings are more moist and sticky than other parrots because of the nectar. The sugary food and feces are prime breeding ground for bacteria so it's very important to clean my cage and bowls frequently to keep me healthy. An avian veterinarian has properly vetted all birds before they are placed up for adoption. Adoption fees include the bird's cage IF the bird has a cage - most do, but please ask!
