My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Satchmo (aka "Satch") is a 6 year beautiful large chocolate labbie boy who came to DLRR as a stray on 10/20/16, weighing in originally at 63 lbs only. One of our awesome DLRR vets removed 2 masses from this big-pawed boy. Since 10/22/16, we have been fostering this sweet and cuddly soul who is starting to show a high spirited and playful personality as well. We believe that Satch was an "outside only" dog who wasn't fed much or loved upon by his previous owner. Thusly, his GI tract is thought to be a bit off kilter and we are working on helping him put on weight and gain muscle mass with nutrition. He has gained about 7 pounds so far (as of 12/2) and has roughly 15-20 more lbs. to go to get to a healthy weigh. Satch has not missed a meal yet, however, part of his upper canine is broken off and it will need to be removed to prevent an abscess from surfacing.
This quiet "Greeter Pleaser", tail-waggin kid-friendly labbie, does not like to be crated but wants to be your constant escort, (preferably with his big ole head laying in your lap), no matter where you walk. We have not heard Satch bark yet but we have seen some anxiety behaviors which will require a long term commitment of patience and training. Satch has had no accidents in the house and gets along well (or rather ignores) our own 10 year old pup, and LOVES to fetch SQUEAKY tennis balls. He recently tested negative for Valley Fever and Heartworm. Satch knows how to use the doggie door and we have left him unattended for short periods of time, BUT he is a counter surfer.

SATCHMO'S NEEDS: We are looking for his forever family to (i) not be gone for long periods of time; (ii) work daily with his anxiety and to build confidence; (iii) have a younger and/or active doggie playmate(s); (iv) exercise him daily; (v) commit to obedience training (which is a requirement in the adoption papers); (vi) continue to work safely on his weight gain (about 2-3 lbs/ week); (vii) address his dental issue; and (viii) shower Satch will lots of love, attention and affection. Satch has not been around cats or a pool but did enjoy his grooming at a local Pet Spa (even fell asleep during the grooming...LOL). Satch is a luv bug at doggie day care and plays well with other dogs there, but a slow introduction to other dogs is always recommended. As a reminder, the DLRR labbies all come microchipped and are given their 4 in 1 vaccinations and Bordatella.

If you are interested in this dog, please fill out an application at www.DLRRphoenix.org. Someone will call to schedule a home visit so you can become an approved adopter. Also, visit our wonderful Facebook page at www.facebook/desertlab. Thanks!
