My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is a courtesy listing for another rescue group. Please read dog’s entire written bio before contacting rescue. To inquire about this dog, you do not need to press any special buttons on this website. Send a regular e-mail to Janet Cook at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. Please provide some information about your home, family and other pets. Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue is a private, foster home based rescue. Though there are some steps that precede meeting a dog, they are quick and expeditious. Thank you!

Annika is an approximately 7-month-old pure-bred female German Shepherd Dog. She was rescued from a neglect/abuse situation. She currently weighs around 50 lbs. and may continue to grow, of course. She is a good weight, not emaciated in the slightest; however, I really cannot estimate how large she will get.

Annika, like all German Shepherd Dogs, is a very smart girl, picking up the house routine quickly, the crate, potty-training, the dog door, etc. However, at this junction in her development, all Annika cares about is play play play. She LOVES to play with another dog in the rescue, Sidney, and all day long she waves various toys in front of his face, enticing him to chase her, wrestling, and playing tug-of-war with various toys. She loves playing ball, but I try to minimize that activity, because I can see that it can become an obsession. I have never seen her get possessive or aggressive with toys or the ball because there are plenty of balls and toys to go around. After a lot of playing, she will lie down and settle. Currently, she eats in a crate, sleeps in a crate, and is crated if I have to leave the house for a bit. Otherwise, she is loose inside my house and is doing great! I leave a door open so they can go in and out, to limited house access, throughout the day if it is their free time. She and Sidney do sometimes play inside, but I tell them to tone it down. She has not been destructive towards anything and so far, all that she has put in her mouth is toys and her rawhide chews. She has not had a potty accident inside the house, and she also knows the doggie door. The crate size is 42 inches long, of the wire type. All in all, she does great with the rescue routine.

At this stage, there is some jumping on me and it seems as if she thinks she is a little dog who can get up on my lap and jump up on couches to play, so I am trying to teach her her own size. She is a sweet and loving animal and obviously loves all people and puts her paws up on me from time to time to get some love and give love. She takes treats pretty roughly, so again, when a dog is a puppy, obviously training will be needed. She is a dog that should be placed in an appropriately sized wire crate if folks are not at home. We will not allow her to be put outside in a yard unsupervised at this juncture when folks are gone. She must be safely secured in a crate during this phase of learning while no one is around to supervise her. An adopter must be willing to purchase (or borrow) one if they do not already have one of the 42 inch long size.

You must meet the following criteria to be considered for adoption:
• People who are not gone from home for long, extended hours on a daily basis.
• Another dog in the home for play and companionship. (We feel that Annika has completely come to happy life here at the rescue, and that she was deprived of so much before. So now, we want her to have another dog to play with her and that she can feel connected to. We are open to a dog of most any size. Annika might even be a good candidate to also live with cats.)
• Previous knowledge of this breed is a plus but not required.
• A large wire crate (42 inches) for Annika to be securely left, inside the home, during a transitional phase to a new place, until she can be trusted to be left loose when folk are away from home.
• Applicants must be between 30 and 65 years of age.
• No infants or toddlers, please, but we will consider families with children who are old enough to understand how to be respectful of a dog.
• We only adopt dogs as INDOOR/outdoor dogs no matter the size or how big they get. Dogs cannot be excluded to an outside area, away from the people, when the humans are at home. We really appreciate when people take the time to teach their dog good house manners, and boundaries, instead of always having dogs outside. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house. Doggie doors are a plus.
• Some type of conventional backyard; no patios only please.

If you are interested in Annika, please write/send an e-mail to Janet Cook to: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. You do not need to press any special buttons on this website; just send a regular e-mail. Please write with some information about your home, family members, other pets, dog experience. I sincerely apologize, but I simply do not have time to answer single questions such as, “Is this dog available?” or “Can I come and meet this dog?” Only those who read the bio, as well as send an e-mail with the requested information will be considered to apply.

We have an application process that you can read about by going to this website: www.angelsheartdogrescue.com and going to the Adoption Tab (look at tabs along the top, far left). The adoption fee for Annika is $325. Annika is spayed, fully vaccinated (including rabies), front-lined, dewormed, and micro-chipped. If you are interested in Annika, please contact Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. The phone number to the rescue is: 626-340-9316. There is no need to phone the rescue until you have first submitted an interest via e-mail.
