My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Abi is a very gentle 7 year old pit mix who lives in a foster home with another dog and small children (ages 3 & 6). She is very tolerant of the kids and is very easy going. The kids joke that the most dangerous part of Abi is her tail because it can sting when it wags. She’s overall very mellow in the house and well behaved. She can be trusted in the house without a crate, but she does crate well if needed. Abi enjoys snuggling and lying on a soft dog bed as well as going for car rides.

Outside Abi does perk up and is playful. She enjoys playing with the other dog in the home and chasing squirrels. Abi barks to express her needs such as when she is ready for dinner or when she wants to go outside. Abi will also bark when she is excited to meet new people or dogs. Sometimes her bark can sound intimidating but she is just saying hi! Abi does not jump on new people. In fact, Abi was able to be a guest at the Animal Rescue Project's Lucky Paws Dinner where she met many new people. She is very social and approaches people gently.

Abi has had a rough life. It is not known what her life was like before but she was in rough shape when the ARP got her out of a local animal control facility. She has had pyometra (infected uterus) and had to have emergency surgery. Abi also had a torn ACL which the ARP was able to get repaired. It is likely Abi may still need some dental work upon adoption. However, after being in her foster home for many months she is finally ready to start looking for her perfect forever home where she can snore on the couch all day.

****Her adoption fee is $275****.

The Animal Rescue Project (www.animalrescueproject.org) is committed to the best possible veterinary care for the pets it rescues and it is looking for adopters who will be similarly committed.

All dogs and puppies are given a general check-up when they enter our program. They receive medication to remove any intestinal parasites (worms), fleas, and ticks they may have. Dogs greater than six months of age are checked for heartworm. If heartworm positive, the Animal Rescue Project treats the disease. Dogs and pups receive all age-appropriate vaccinations for distemper, and dogs greater than four months of age are also vaccinated for rabies, in compliance with State of Michigan laws.

Most dogs and older puppies are spayed or neutered before adoption. In the case of puppies not old enough to be safely sterilized, a $25 deposit is required at the time of adoption and is refunded to the adopter with proof of sterilization.

The Animal Rescue Project requires every adopter to establish an active relationship with a veterinarian no later than 10 days after adoption. Adopters will receive a plan for routine veterinary care at the time of adoption and are expected to work with their vet to complete the plan.
