My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Are you looking for a wonderful companion who would love nothing better than to sit beside you on the couch for an evening of reading or watching TV followed by a night of keeping your feet warm in bed? Then Riley is the perfect match for you!

Riley is a 13 pound Shih Tzu mix, approximately 3-4 years old. He is a very sweet, quiet boy who had a rough start in life, but he is learning that the world is big, fun and full of wonderful smells, tasty food and kind humans. He is quite timid, but likes to be close to his people and loves to have his ears scratched. He is learning to walk on a leash and enjoys going on short, leisurely walks. In his foster home, Riley is on a regular schedule of eating and going outside, and he has never had an accident in the house, but it unknown if he may do so if left for a long period of time. He is a quiet dog, who has never barked at anything (yet).

Because Riley came to our rescue with no prior training or socialization with people, he will need a family who is willing to provide him with structure and lots of attention to help him feel safe and to learn how wonderful life can be! Riley would do well in a quiet home with adults and adult children who will understand his insecurity and inexperience as he continues to learn to trust. He has had one interaction with a large, energetic dog that didn’t go too well, he was very scared, but he is cool with his foster kitty sisters and may be fine with another small, nonaggressive dog. An adopter who could be home with Riley much of the day is important. Riley does not like to be confined to a kennel, so that will not be an option for him when he is left alone. He is currently not confined in his foster home and has been fine.

We highly recommend that Riley’s adopters enroll him in a basic, positive reinforcement based obedience class. Proper and consistent training will help strengthen the bond with his new family members, build his confidence and set him up for success in his new home.

Everyone who has met Riley has fallen in love with his sweet little face and gentle manner. He has bonded with his foster mom and follows her from room to room, when he’s not sound asleep in his favorite spot on the couch. He’s a laid back guy looking for someone to keep working with him on his fearfulness and help him discover how to run, play and reach his full potential!

Riley is in excellent health. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $23.28 sales tax for a total of $343.28. His foster mom prefers that Riley find a permanent home within the Metro area and hopes that his adopters will bring him to the annual Shih Tzu reunion held each fall.

To meet Riley, please complete an adoption application. You can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Minnetonka Petco near Ridgedale on the first Saturday of each month.
